Problem with shifting into hi gear, speed surges

My craftsmam lawn tractor seems to not have much power while in a drive gear. It will not go into hi gear or 5th or 6th speed. It seems to surge and slip. Is there a transmission? What can be the problem. Steve

While driving my jeep seems to be shifting gears the rpms rev up and then goes back down almost as if surging I changed speed sensor as a guess so far but did not work?

old 1995
we need vastly more symptoms then that, sorry
if the engine surges, that is first. (surges in 1 gear)
but if a transmission down shifts that is normal, rpm rises
(after all its a lower gear) (higher numeric ratio)
find any machanic in town
ask him test drive it.!
10 min.later he wilt tell you
its trans issues.
or its engine, super easy this is driving.

seems you can not, and learning is 1hour in car class..or 10x that lacking facts of drive train functions.

stop guessing. why spend cash on a useless sensor now.
spend cash on $1 shop diagnosis and WIN.
i promise !

or get it scanned.
and post all those DTC errors. P0700? and more.

Cub Cadet 1212

You have to press the clutch\brake pedal to shift up or down gears. Check your manual, you may even have to come to a complete stop in order to change speeds,or direction. Cub Cadet Garden Tractor Operators Manual ManualsOnline com

I HAVE A 1994 MTD 18HP BRIGGS WITH MOD #144Q828H118, WHILE I WAS MOWING THE CLUTCH WOULD NOT RELEASE AND THE GEAR SHIFT WILL NOT GO INTO THE LOWER GEARS. WHAT HAPPENED?

The tractor has a variable speed pulley for the 1-6 gears. You will want to check the top pulley on the shaft that is in the center of your tractor between the engine and transaxle. you may have broke the spring or adjuster.

I have a Poulan PRO Model PB20H42YT. It was working great when slowly I lost forwar/reverse motion; freewheel control is engaged properly.

sounds like the drive belt is off or broken, on the lawn tractors if you remove the plate, where you shift gears, you will see the belt.

I have 2001 Husqvarna lawn tractor model YTH1746 wnt go into gear

those fluid drive transmissions fail on quite a few brands as they all use the same ones....replace the trans...they are expensive but still cheaper than a new mower.

MTD Lawn Tractor problem

The front belt should be a 954-0280A, rear 954-0370. When you go to higher gears, the front belt should be getting tighter as the vari-speed pulley is moving further back. Remove the shift plate, put the transmission in neutral. Start the engine, put speed selector in highest gear and slowly let out on the clutch. You should be able to see what the problem is. It will do everything the same as if were in gear, except move. Make sure you have the correct belts.
