1) On the motherboard the Blue ram memory slot that is closest to the copper heatsink, is ram memory Slot 1.
Also known as DIMM 1.

Ram memory ALWAYS has to be in this ram memory slot.
The Processor reads ram memory Slot 1 first.

2) The Blue ram memory slots are Slot 1 (DIMM 1), and Slot 3.
(DIMM 3)
The Black ram memory slots are Slot 2 (DIMM 2), and Slot 4.
(DIMM 4)

To run Dual Channel ram memory, means there are two LIKE ram memory modules ('Stick'), and they are installed in the SAME channel.

This would mean to alike ram memory modules, in both Blue ram memory slots, or both Black ram memory slots.

Since the ram memory modules need to be alike, they are generally purchased from the same manufacturer, and are the same kind.

Running ram memory in a dual channel configuration, is supposed to increase ram memory 'speed', up to 30 percent.

This is Baloney!
May look good on paper, but in actual use in the field it's cr@p.
Actual performance increase is more like 1 to 2 percent.
This has been proven by Tom's Hardware, and many, many motherboards, ram memory, Processors, etc.

So you have 2GB of DDR2 Sdram, huh?
Is it just one 'stick' of ram memory, or are you referring to two 1GB sticks?

If the above holds true install them in Slot 1 and Slot 3.

If not, and it is a 2GB stick of ram memory, be sure it is installed in Slot 1 (DIMM 1)
Install the 1GB stick in Slot 2.

It isn't the same as the 2GB stick.
It is 1GB.
Does NOT go in a dual channel configuration.

(Catching all this? There is NO dual channel ram memory!

It is ram memory that is -> ALIKE, and used in a -> dual channel configuration.
Used in two separate ram memory slots, that support the dual channel configuration.

Sold with the advertising scheme of 'Dual Channel', but really just means the two ram memory modules, (Or four), are -> alike.

1) Same Voltage used
2) Same Ram Timings
3) Same Chip Configuration
4) Same size in amount
5) Same frequency rate ('Speed')

With ram memory in a dual channel configuration, the ram memory modules team up on the task.)

I would try it. May have to reboot up to 4 times for BIOS to recognize the ram memory. May NOT have to.

You have a D.I.P. switch on the motherboard. SW1
Has 4 dip switches, numbered 1 through 4.
The positioning, (ON or OFF), determines the 'speed' support for the Processor.

Remove the new RAM (leave the original in) and see if it works without them - they might not be compatible with your computer.

From what you have stated, the original ram memory was two sticks of 512MB.
It's PC2-5300
(DDR2 Sdram at 667MegaHertz)

When installing ram memory, and installing two sticks with one stick being larger, the larger stick of ram memory is installed in Slot 1.

This is the ram memory slot that is closest to the Processor.
(The Processor reads Slot 1 first)
On the motherboard it has DIMM 1 printed next to Slot 1.

The 1GB stick should go into Slot 1 (DIMM 1), and the 512MB stick should go into Slot 2 (DIMM 2)

Won't boot up with the original ram memory installed again?
1) What type, and size of 1GB ram memory did you install?

2) What ram memory slot did you install it in?

3) Did you follow anti-static precautions BEFORE you put your hands inside your computer, and BEFORE you took that ram memory stick out of it's protective anti-static bag?

Before you answer my questions try this;

If the two sticks of 512MB PC2-5300 are still installed, follow anti-static precautions, and remove them.

Take a pencil eraser, and clean the gold plated contact pins on the bottom of each ram module. (Stick)

(The above example is DDR Sdram, not DDR2 Sdram. I posted the link so that the gold plated contacts are clearly shown.

92 on each side.
DDR2 Sdram has 240 contact pins.

Remove the eraser dust with air. Use a can of compressed air for computers, or air pressure from your mouth.

Reinstall the ram memory modules.

Computer unplugged from power, press the Power On button in.
Hold the button in for a count of Five seconds.
(Count 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005)

Let go of the Power On button.
Do this procedure two more times.

What you are doing is clearing CMOS Error Codes, and resetting BIOS back to the factory settings.

Plug the computer back into power.
WAIT 1 minute, then turn the computer on.

I await your findings, and answers to my questions.

According to the specs of this motherboard, it only supports a maximum of 256 MB of SDRAM. So, it definitely does not support 1 GB DDR2 memory modules.

Copied above from ECS website so the answer would yes as it supports up to 3.2GB/s transfer rates at DDR400

The simple answer is NO, you will need to upgrade to a whole new Motherboard and of course the cost of this is essentially the same as building a whole new PC so you may as well look into a whole new system.
