I ordered one online and the wheel which takes in the paper was separated from the printer when I opened it.

Unload all paper. Examine the feed track for any obstruction- paper fragment - cookie crumbs. Take a vacuum nozzle to it and give it a good suck out. Now feed a heavy weight paper/thin card through. Did it do the trick?

I had the same problem with my mp 160, I tried to print but the printer only took the left side of the page and the paper got jammed. I pulled it out but I think a piece was left inside the printer. Error message was blinking, but somehow I got the printer moving again. I tried to print again, but this time the printer would take 1/10 of the whole page and stop, even though rollers were moving. My solution for this was to take a piece of thin cardbore(I used a magazine cover), cut it in a shape of A4, put it in printer, printed it and when the rollers start moving I forcebly pushed the cardboard through. Now it seems to work fine.

This could be a problem with the port. If you have the printer attached to a USB hub, directly connect to the computer. Try connecting to a different USB port and test the current port with a known working device. Consider trying a new USB cable (minor damage could be a factor in signal loss).
I hope this helps.
