My rainbow vacuum cleaner was plugged in but was off. Smoke started coming from the motor, and it caused my fuse to electrical breaker to flip off. Now the vacuum won't come on. Any ideas how this could happen when off, and what is the most likely problem with the vacuum.
The motor winding burned out. Perhaps the motor was very hot when the vac was turned off after the last use and the insulation of the motor windings broke down when the air stopped moving thought the unit. Perhaps also the polarity of the receptacle it was plugged into is reversed or the plug on the vacuum is not polarized. Those things in combination could cause this but this is kind of a long shot guess. In any case the blower motor is likely burned out and will need to be replaced and checked out.
