My craftsman yt1000 23bhp, i have been jump leading my mower for around 6 months now, i started my mower last night no problem but got up this morning, turned the key and it just buzzed. so i origonally thourght it was the starter motor, so i gave it a tap with a hammer but it just changed the high pitch buzzing to a low pitched buzzing. now it just clicks? WHATS THIS PLEASE?

We'll since you have been jumping a weak battery with another vehicle to crank the mower you can burn up the battery charging module on your mower leaving you a dead or weak battery making you lean towards the starter but could have been a bad battery from the beginning. If the battery checks good after charging then reinstall if it cranks fine with fresh charged battery there's your problem if after running it the battery looses charge then the mower isn't charging the battery. If this proves to be good then look at the starter. Hope this helps

SOURCE: riding mower-starter relay clicks-no start even with jumpers.

The frame of the tractor is the same thing that starter grounds to,so yes ,put the ground any where on the frame or engine block to test the starter. An easier way to test everything is to cross over the large posts on the solenoid with a screwdriver and if it turns then the starter is not the problem. Then you will need to put power from the post on the solenoid that has the battery positive connected to it ,to the post on the solenoid that should come live with the key,if it starts then then you likely need an ignition switch if not you need the solenoid.

Why does the engine turn over and stop like the battery or starter is bad? How do I adjust the valves on a Craftsman riding mower 17.5 HP engine?

Hello Joe

How old is the battery? Battery life in mowers is bad because they usually aren't well looked after in the winter, 6 months use and 6 months neglect.

Also fuel is often left in the tank and in the carb which goes funky.

Do you have a compression tester?

My yt1000 wont start. shall i buy a new starter motor?

Well it sure does sound like the starter, the starter itself has a part called the Bendix (well the name i know it by) Its like a Y shaped clip and it connected to the solenoid. The sound your hearing can indeed be the Bendix is broken or the solenoid is ruined.

Based on the information given I would suggest a new starter. please not that the assumption can wrong as I'm not there in person to have a fist hand look, I must suggest you get it professionally looked at, but I'm betting on a new starter.

Model 917.370410 won't start

Sounds to me like this model is a POS. I also have this same model, purchased last August have used only 5 or 6 times , has the same symptoms: hard pull, puff of smoke, won't run , etc. Even brought this to an authorized dealer to get it to run, but then it only ran a couple more times, dead again. Does anyone know of any recalls fro this lemon? I can appreciate everyone troubleshooting , but you shouldn't have to tear apart a 5 month old lawnmower which will only result in your warranty being voided.

I have a Craftsman, front wheel drive mower. I have replaced the front (drive) wheels every 6 months for the last two years. The plastic gears on the wheels just get chewed up. What is the problem?

Must be a bad mower that got thru the assembly line somehow. I have owned a front wheel drive Craftsman mower for 7 yrs and have never had one single problem with anything on it.

We purchased a Craftsman 17.5 HP, 42" mower w/ electric start, model No 917.273372. After the first year, (gently used) the starter won't even turn, click, or anything. We would replace battery,...

There's a couple of places to look on these. First, there are a ton of bypass switches on these that like to go bad. Most people bypass these because they cause so much trouble. They're located on the seat, the clutch, and the gear shift, and I may be forgetting one or two. It's easy to figure out which ones they are; they're all on the solenoid circuit. This leads to the next part. The solenoids also like to go. You can test it by running wires to the small leads from the battery. They're fairly cheap...if I remember right they cost around $8 or so new.

Craftsman hydro gear transaxle problem

check the brake for sticking and dragging. check the bypass lever, make sure it's disengaged fully. did you just fix a flat rear tire? if so, the square key that links the axle and wheel fell out. do you pull a heavy garden cart around? that can stretch a belt and overheat the trans. last thought, check the belt and see if it came off a pulley, i know that should have been first but it's late and i'm tired. good night

Brand new Craftsman 19.5 HP Riding Mower Sputtering(Manual Trans)

The hose you reconnected was probably for the air to the air filter. Check to see if while the hose was disconnected it pulled grass or dust into the air filter. Check the air filter, try running the mower without the filter. If it runs then replace or blow out the air filter. Hope this helps.

Craftsman 19.5 riding mower starts runs quits no power

When you let it sit did you remove all the fuel or add a additive? If you did not then I would recommend that you remove all the fuel and add brand new fuel to your system. Gasoline only last for about 3 to 4 months before it will start to go bad and this sounds like your problem
