Can you please give me step by step insturctions on how to totally wipe my hardrive on my dell latitude 600? Then I will refoat it back to its orignal settings. thank You

Unless you're donating the drive, there's no need to do anything before re-installing the OS. When Windows asks where you want to install the OS to, you'll see an option for formatting the drive first.
If you are donating it and are worried about someone recovering the data (after formatting and re-installing, it's not something the average tech can do) I'd recommend booting the laptop off CD/USB drive with this image (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) and running one of the Hard Disk Wiping utilities. Mind you, some of the very thorough ones (military-grade) can take DAYS.

How to Reformat Toshiba Satellite A135

If you are installing Windows XP then you will want to download and install a little free program called Speccy http://www.piriform.com/speccy
This will tell you everything you need to know about your pc which will come in handy because XP won't load your networking drivers and you won't be able to access the internet. With Speccy you will know exactly what network card or module you will need to get your drivers and save them to a USB or CD/DVD, not to mention video and audio as well. If you're installing Vista, 7, or some other OS it shouldn't matter.
Back up everything you want to save to removable media.
Put in your installation disk and reboot
Hit any key to boot from cd when asked.
At the Welcome to Setup page, press Enter. Press F8 to accept the Windows XP Licensing Agreement. You'll be asked if you want to repair your existing Windows XP installation. Press ESC to bypass the repair and install a fresh copy. All your existing disk partitions will be listed.

You want to delete the current partition where Windows is installed. Use the arrow key to select it, and press D to delete it. Press L to confirm. Then, to create a new partition, select the unpartitioned space and press C. To create a new partition with the maximum amount of space allotted to it, press Enter.

Install Windows on the newly created partition. Format the drive as NTFS (Quick if you want, but I would be thorough just to be sure.) Depending on the size of the drive and how fast your computer is, this will take some time. Then, follow Windows Setup's steps, set your area code and name and password (be sure to password protect the first time your asked to as this will be the hidden admin account you will see in safe mode), and let it reboot as many times as necessary until it asks you to log in for the first time. Also, make sure the Guest account is disabled. Enjoy.
Hope this helps.

    Notes
    • If the selected partition is a new partition, the option to leave the current file system intact is not available.
    • If the selected partition is larger than 32 gigabytes (GB), the FAT file system option is not available.
    • If the selected partition is larger than 2 GB, the Windows Setup program uses the FAT32 file system (you must press ENTER to confirm).
    • If the partition is smaller than 2 GB, the Windows Setup program uses the FAT16 file system.
    • If you deleted and created a new System partition, but you are installing Windows XP on a different partition, you are prompted to select a file system for both the System and Startup partitions.
  3. Press ENTER.
  4. After the Windows Setup program formats the partition, follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install Windows XP. Gateway MX6455 - AMD Turion 2.0Gb with 1Gb Ram Stops working and goes to black screen after POST. Will not boot into windows. The more I try re-booting, the faster it stops.

If you recently installed and any new program it could be a corrupt driver. Boot to safe mode by hitting F8 and delete it. If you didn't, you will have to remove drivers individually. Failing hardrive is another culprit.

You can't insert a Hard drive from another PC because when it was installed on the old PC it was setup to work with the hardware for that particular computer.

You will need to reinstall a fresh copy of windows on it to make it work with the new PC it's in.Boot from CD run windows setup, format the drive then do a fresh install.

This should fix the problem, if you have any new info or need further help with any of that post back. Thank you for choosing Fixya!

Reinstall windows xp

How do I install Microsoft Windows XP. Answer: Below are the steps required to installing the standard version of Microsoft Windows XP. It is important to realize that some computer manufacturers have their own proprietary install of Windows XP on a Recovery or Restore disc. Therefore the below steps may not all apply to how Windows XP is installed on your computer. If the below steps do not apply to how Microsoft Windows XP is installed on your computer and you are unable to correctly reinstall Windows XP it is recommended you contact your computer manufacturer for additional help, Computer Hope will not know how to install Windows using your manufacturers CD.
  1. Before following the below steps see document CH000186 for a checklist of things to consider before erasing the computer and starting over.
  2. The standard Microsoft Windows XP CD is bootable. Therefore start by placing the Windows XP CD in your computer and reboot.
  3. As computer boots you will be prompted to press any key to boot from CD, at this time press any key. If you do not get this prompt or are unable to boot from the CD please refer to document CH000217 for information on how to boot from a CD.
  4. When the Windows XP setup menu appears press ENTER to continue the setup.
  5. Next, the Windows XP licensing agreement will open, if you agree to this agreement press F8.
  6. Next, Windows will give you the option to repair Windows XP or to install a fresh copy if Windows XP is already installed on the computer. If you're wanting to install a new copy of Windows XP press ESC.
  7. Next, the partition setup will appear, it is recommended that if a partition already exists and you do not plan on having multiple operating systems on the computer that you delete the existing partition before continuing the setup. You will know if a partition exists if you see anything other then "Unpartitioned space".

    To delete the partition:
on the drive that you press D and ENTER then press L to delete the partition and then press ENTER and then if you are aware that this will delete all information on the partition.

Note: If you have multiple partitions, we suggest deleting all partitions unless you plan on using these partitions. Deleting each of the other partitions can be done using the same above steps.

    To create the partition:
Select the unpartitioned space you wish to create a partition on and press C, specify the size of the partition in MB, by default this will have the full amount of the drive and press ENTER.

  8. Once you have a partition ready to have Windows XP installed on it press ENTER to install.
  9. Next you will need to select whether the drive will use FAT or NTFS. We suggest NTFS for users who are not sure which file system they wish to use.
  10. After selecting the file system and pressing enter the computer will start formatting the drive. Depending on how big the partition is will determine the length of time the format will take.
  11. After the format Windows will begin installing the files and then take you through a wizard to continue with the remainder of the setup.
Good Luck, Please dont for get to Vote/Thank you.
