I replaced one of the color cartridge and now it makes a HORRIBLE squeaky-grinding noise when the cartridge "base" resets. Then it gives me the error code: 5100 and says to restart and if that doesn't work to look at the manual. The manual says call canon - ugh!! Even removing the cartridge and restarting the printer doesn't fix it.

OK. It sounds like there's something on the carriage bar restricting the movement of the ink carrier. Perhaps some ink got on the bar.
Try taking a clean lintfree rag dampened with rubbing alcohol and clean the bar. This may have to be repeated a number of times to get the foreign matter off the bar and the ink carriage.
Let me know if this helps. iF it does not we can try something else.
Thanks.

Yes, 5100 means the carriage is not moving back and forth properly or there is grease on the encoder strip behind the carriage assembly. Grease spots make it lose count and slam into the side and grind gears. You need to clean the strip with a Q-tip moist with alcohol, but very carefully, not too much pressure on the strip.
