Last week the battery had to stop on charge over night as the car would not start. but now the engine shape light is flashing from time to time. please can you help

If by "trying to start" you mean that the engine is turning then it isn't the starter that's bad as a couple have said. The starter's sole purpose is to spin the engine so it can start if, gas, spark, compression and timing are correct. If any one of those four are not available the starter can spin the engine until the battery dies and it won't start. If you don't know how to check for proper delivery of fuel, spark, timing and compression then I'd suggest taking it to a reliable mechanic.

Your problem is you have a bad connection somewhere like at parking lights/stoplights/rear lights/so what you do is remove all parking and rear lights then turn on indecators and check the lightsyou will find that one of them has a bad earth and when you put them back in the lights flash dimmly and thats the one with a bad connection or a bad earth going to that light.
