Was printing ok, then the printer stopped and the two KY & MC icons are lit up alongside the lit up 'paper' icon. I have changed 3 cartridges just now and the lights still come up and the printer stops. Thank you

Please try pulling the power cord out of the back of the printer (or better yet, just turn it off at the plug).

This may reset the printer enough to get it working again... Sometimes it just locks up.

Let me know if that solves it...

Is the print head moving at all?

Turn power off and see if you can gently move the printhead carriage or turn the carriage belt pulley on the left. If it moves freely without the carriage moving. Thats your problem.

There is a rubber mounted belt connector under the printhead carriage that often breaks when the slide is too dry from lack of lubrication.

I called hp to get the part. No part available. so I repaired the part with epoxy. Not an easy fix.

HP Officejet Pro K550 - Printhead Error Message on new printhead - cleaned printhead, contacts... tried all fixes... what now? Is it faulty?

I have the same problem. I replaced both printhead cartidges. The MC light stopped blinking, but the KY light kept blinking. I thought it was a faulty new KY ink cartridge. So I returned that cartridge and got a new one. Still the same issue. I called hp and they said the print head is bad now and all they focused on was trying to sell me a new printer. UG! I also heard wiping off the printhead with a dry cloth may help. Did you get yours to wokr?
tip

Print Head Cleaning Cycle

Please confirm that the head cleanings were done using the most effective method listed below.

1. Make sure the printer is turned on but not printing.

NOTE: You cannot clean the print head if the any of the cartridges are expended. Replace the appropriate ink cartridge before proceeding.

2. Load letter size paper.

3. Click on START.

For Windows 95/98/ME: Click SETTINGS, PRINTERS, then right click on the EPSON STYLUS PRINTER ICON. Select PROPERTIES from the drop-down menu. Proceed to Step 4.

For Windows 2000: Click SETTINGS, PRINTERS, then right click on the EPSON STYLUS PRINTER ICON. Select PRINTING PREFERENCES from the drop-down menu. Proceed to Step 4.

For Windows XP: Click CONTROL PANEL, PRINTERS AND FAXES. Right click your EPSON STYLUS PRINTER ICON. Select PRINTING PREFERENCES from the drop-down menu. If this icon is not showing, select VIEW INSTALLED PRINTERS. Then right click the EPSON STYLUS PRINTER ICON. Select PRINTING PREFERENCES from the drop-down menu. Proceed to Step 4.

For Windows Vista: Click CONTROL PANEL, HARDWARE AND SOUND then PRINTERS. Note: these steps may vary depending on how Vista is setup. Right click on the EPSON STYLUS PRINTER ICON. Select PRINTING PREFERENCES from the drop-down menu. Proceed to Step 4.

4. Click on the UTILITY or MAINTENANCE tab, then click on HEAD CLEANING.

5. Follow the instructions on the screen to clean the print head. Cleaning takes about 30 seconds, during which time the printer makes some noise and the power light flashes. Never turn off the printer while the power light is flashing, unless the printer has not moved or made noise for more than 5 minutes.

6. When the power light stops flashing click PRINT NOZZLE CHECK PATTERN and then click NEXT.

7. If the nozzle check pattern has no gaps in its lines, click FINISH. If the pattern has any gaps, click CLEAN to clean the printhead again.

8. If the situation continues after three cleaning cycles and nozzle checks, replace one of the affected ink cartridge(s).

9. Once the cartridge(s) has been replaced, please follow steps one through seven up to three times.

If the nozzle check still has gaps after you have run at least 3 consecutive cleaning cycles and replaced the affected ink cartridge(s), your printer will require service.

***

Use the Printer Driver Utility to clean the print head. Alternatively, try this SSC Service Utility.
Also try changing the affected ink cartridge.
All else fails, your printer will require service.

After changing printer cartridge, all printed pages have 3 black horizontal lines across the page about an inch apart.

It sounds to me that you need to run the clean print cartridges utility.

  1. Press the Setup button.
  2. Use the arrow keys to select Tools and then press the OK button.
  3. Select Clean Print Cartridge and then press OK . The device prints a test page.
  4. Examine the test page. If the print quality of the page is good, stop here. If the print quality is bad, go on to the next step for further cleaning.
    1. Open the Printer Toolbox . There are two ways to do this:
    1. Open HP Director , select the Settings menu, then the Print Settings submenu, and finally the Printer Toolbox .
    • If the HP Director method does not work, open Printers and Faxes in the Windows Control Panel , then right-click your printer icon and choose Properties . Click on Printing Preferences . Click the Services tab, then the Service This Device icon.
    1. The Printer Toolbox opens. On the Device Services tab, click Clean the Print Cartridges , then follow the on-screen instructions. Up to three levels of cleaning are available. Discard or recycle the page that prints.
    2. If above does not work, then remove the black cartridge, and olace it upside down in an area it won't be disturbed for an hour, then place it back in the printer, and print a test page. (This only applies to black cartridges)

How do I change the default paper size from Letter to A4 in my HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless?

Don't set by using the "Print" option.
    Go to [Start]
    [Printers and Faxes]
right-click on the HP Printer entry
! Don't select "Printing Preferences"! from there
    Select [properties]
    Select [Advanced] tab
    Select [Printing Defaults]
    [Advanced}
(I know, the screen looks the same, but it functions differently this way)
    Change paper size to "Letter"
    [OK, OK, OK]
    *done*

My 8x10 photos have half a blue tint and half a yellow tint. I cleaned the heads and aligned the print cartridges and that didn't make a difference. Working with a HP2610. Thanks! Leslie

Step 1 - Check the ink levels
    1. Open the Printer Toolbox . There are two ways to do this:Open HP Director , select the Settings menu, then the Print Settings submenu, and finally the Printer Toolbox
      • Open Printers and Faxes in the Windows Control Panel , then right-click your printer icon and choose Properties . Click Printing Preferences . Click the Services tab, then the Service This Device icon. The Printer Toolbox opens. Click the Estimated Ink Level tab. A cartridge may be running out of ink even if the graphic shows ink remaining (see the note at the start of this section). Lines or streaks always appear in printouts when the cartridges begin to run out of ink. Replace print cartridges that are out of ink or low on ink. Step 2 - Check the printer settings
        1. In the program being used for printing, click File , and then click Print The Print window opens.Make sure the appropriate product is selected, and then click Preferences or Properties .The Preferences/Properties window opens.Click the Printing Shortcuts tab.
        2. Consider modifying some or all of the options in the Printing Shortcuts menu to increase print quality.Print quality : If the quality of the printouts is not acceptable, try increasing the print quality. To print more quickly, try decreasing the print quality.Paper type : If one of the options matches the paper type exactly, select it instead of Automatic .Paper size : Make sure that this option matches the paper loaded in the product. To see additional options, click the Advanced tab, and then click Advanced Features .The Advanced Features window opens. U043

The U043 error code indicates that an ink tank is not installed. One or more ink tank icons on the LCD should also be lit up. The lit up icon indicates the applicable ink tank. Verify these tanks are indeed fully seated in the print head and that they are lit up red.

You can also press the OK button to clear this message and continue.
