I just did this last week!
1 Unplug Mixer
2 Remove screw on TOP of mixer body, at back.
3 Remove rear cover and paper-gasket thing (its not the end of
the world if you end up tearing it a little).
4 the phase control (little circuit board w/wires) is at the top (you
should see it very easily) held on by one screw, remove it.
5 when the circuit board is unscrewed, disconnect all the wires
that are connected FROM THE CIRCUIT BOARD to the
black control plate (NOT all wires-there should be 4 left on
the control plate at this point). you don't need to
remember where all the colors go as the control plate is
labeled->but looking at them and making sure you
understand the abbreviations would be beneficial
(BK=black, BL=Blue RW=Red&White W=white R=red etc.
6 install new phase control (screw), either buy new thermal
grease (used to keep the board cool->it transfers heat to
the mixer's housing) or try to salvage what you can from
the old one.
7 connect wires, paying attention to labels.
8 reinstall paper gasket, then cover, then screw to hold on back-
cover.

http://downloads.mendingshed.com/KitchenAid_Service_Manual.pdf here is a Service manual that gives good breakdown & repair in English with B & W photos. Can anyone who does a full download on this (16.2 mb, 32 pgs) please email me a copy. I only have dial up & connection does not stay up long enough to do a full download. Email : [email protected] or [email protected] . It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks & have a great day.

SOURCE: kitchenaid k45ss won't turn on
if you remove the top you will find a tiny fuse wrapped in a black band on the left side from the back. It connects two white wires which power the top-side motor brush. Most likely this needs to be replaced. You can check by bypassing it with roach clips or a copper wire. Unplug the machine first and be careful!
SOURCE: k45ss kitchenaid stand mixer, i took out the brushes
jrichards - I hate it when that happens! It seems that power is not getting to the armature from the brushes so I would suspect that one or both of the brushes is (are) not seated properly. Did you remove the brushes to replace them or were you just inspecting them? I'd suggest removing them again and making sure the contacts are facing in the right direction to contact the armature. The concave contact face should be resting completely on the armature. If you've turned it 90 degrees too much, it wont' seat properly. I hope this helps... Howard, Burke, VA
