Question about KitchenAid KHMS155LSS 1000 Watts Microwave Oven

Microwave starts by itself - NO JOKE

I have had to shut the circuit braker to the Microwave, it repeatedly starts a cooking cycle by itself. It begins by asking for number of pieces, cycles through the options and then starts to cook by itself. It is very dangerous, ANY SOLUTIONS?

Exact same thing is happening with my Kitchen Aid microwave. Scared the living **** out of me when I found my micro running at 4 AM! I have contacted the mfr and of course....NO RESPONSE after one week.

My microwave was beeping on its own. Then I noticed that the key pad had locked on its own. Well it went away and now it's back and incessant! I have unplugged the microwave for fear that it will turn on (it has not done that yet).

I have KitchenAid YKHMS2050ss-0 that has exact same problem so I do believe you. Only thing I can't believe is that I will have to fix it out of my pocket since it is out of the warranty period. I really dont think electric control pad something that can "broke" under a normal use (we use it avg 3 to 4 times a week mostly to reheat leftovers). I really think they should responsible for correcting inherent defects and not hide behind their warranty excuses. Shame on KitchenAid and NEVER buying their product ever again. I will tell all my family/friends/coworker/clients about self starting microwave that has mind of its own and their manufactuer that refuses to be responsible.

You have a shorting membrane keypad.

If and when an oven is coming on or doing anything by itself, this is very dangerous and can result in a fire.

So until it is repaired, please leave it unplugged or leave the door open when it's not in use, and please do not leave it running unattended.

If you (or someone you know) might want to replace it yourself, I have uploaded a handy guide with pictures showing you what's typically involved.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

If not, please reply back with your brand and model number so we can help you better.

In many brands there is a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

If you would like to have us do this repair for you, we do that for $39.95 plus part costs.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your model number) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

First, do not leave this machine plugged in until it is serviced. If this is a KHMS155LSS, there is a very high probability that you have a keypad short. This defect can cause the machine to start on its own at ANYTIME; at night, while you are away, at work etc.

Contact Whirlpool Customer Service and ask for Safety Dept immediately. They will most likely send A&EMicrowave starts by itself - NO JOKE - 2.gif (Sears) out to fix it. Although they will fix the problem, if the keypad fails again, the underlying self start logic defect is still present. You should be under warranty if it is above model. Please be polite, insistent, but polite. With KitchenAid's pathetic quality in recent years, their customer service reps get more then an earful.

Also, please go to the Consumer Product Safety Commision website at www.cpsc.gov and post a Report Unsafe Products report. This will help get this model recalled before someone loses their home or life.

I almost had a fire this past Monday, Labor DaMicrowave starts by itself - NO JOKE - 2.gif src="/uploads/images/2.gif" alt="2.gif" class="h_mi" />, 9/7/09 when my machine self started at 3 AM with a package of bacon left in it to thaw at room temp for the morning. What a smokey mess.

Chinese made garbage. Shame on Whirlpool. Long live Hobart!, please buy back KitchenAid and bring back the lost quality.

Similar problem with my Frigidaire (Electrolux) PLMVZ169GCD from 2008, it would start randomly by itself or if you banged on the bottom of the keypad or pushed up/down on the door handle.
CAUSE: the ribbon from the keypad comes thru a cutout in the metal that it is mounted on to attach to the control board. The cutout has very sharp sides and the ribbon was rubbing on 1 side of it. You couldn't see any damage (very small), but it appears to have cut thru the insulating layer and was starting to short some of the lines to either ground (the mounting plate) or each other.
SOLUTION: I added an insulator (fish paper from an old pinball switch) between the ribbon and the cutout side and then used electrical tape to hold it in. The electric tape itself would probably work. You just have to get the ribbon off of the metal edge of the cutout.
Took about 20 min to figure out the board removal (take pic before removing the wires!), adding the insulator and reinstalling.
Good luck!

My Kitchen Aid of 3.4 yrs did this last week. Local independent dealer where i bought the unit replaced entire touch pad - mother board unit. Not 20 minutes later it did it again. Now, repairman just left puzzled. Wants to take it to shop to "look at." I am going to push for an entire new unit.

Why has my frigidaire microwave (model PLEB30M9ECE) stopped beeping. It still cooks but no longer beeps

Good Afternoon Friend,

I understand that your Frigidaire microwave, model# PLEB30M9ECE, is cooking, but has stopped beeping. I suggest resetting your appliance, by either unplugging it or shutting the power off at your home's circuit breaker, for 3-5 minutes. Sometimes there can be a miscommunication between the different boards inside your appliance. Restore power and try any cooking cycle. I ask that you please follow up with a comment on the post, at your convenience, to advise if further troubleshooting is needed or if your appliances status has changed successfully. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-

Sounds like stuck relay contacts. Magnetrons need a high voltage source which is controlled by a micro to relay and then from relay to voltage source. Even the turntable works via a relay.

Ge pvm2070smss shuts down

It may be a noisy magnetron if the failure occurs in a second or two of hitting "Start" to begin cooking.

See this FixYa solution. even though your model number is different.

Otherwise, if the internal cooling fan is not running when you are cooking, it will shut down after 30-60 seconds or so and stay off until it cools back down.

Whirlpool microwave fuse has blown multiple times

It depends on which fuse and when it blows. Wish you had mentioned that.

But usually it's a defective door switch or door switch mount.

If the fuse blows at random times while it's cooking, it may just be a loose fuse holder. Those have to be replaced due to metal fatigue, not just squeezed tight with pliers.

If it blows as soon as you hit "Start" to begin cooking, you have a shorting high voltage capacitor.

If it blows when you open or close the door, you have a loose or defective door switch or latch.

Shuts itself off mid cooking cycle -- as if unplugged; then after 5 minutes or so turns itself back on as if it was just plugged in (forgetting all previous settings)

If you just put the fan blade back on, it will almost certainly fall off again.

The best bet is to slightly rough up the contact area of the shaft with sandpaper and use a little super glue to hold the blade assembly on the shaft, and let it set a few minutes before using it.

I always recommend that you use the hood vent exhaust fan when cooking on the stove top to keep heat, steam, and grease out of the controls.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

If the digital programmer circuit / controller does not get a feedback signal from the inverter for a period of 3 seconds, the controller will stop the cook cycle.

In most cases, this is a problem with the inverter or a bad magnetron.

Due to the lethal voltages used and produced, I do not recommend that an inexperienced person work on these.

I would recommend that you contact your nearest Panasonic-authorized servicer.

Whirlpool(GH7145XF2-0) does not work occasionally

That's how it would sound if you were cooking on a power level less than full power.

If you enter the cooking time and hit Start, it should cook at full power by default and not cycle like you describe.

If you are using some sensor cook setting or automatic type cooking setting, it may cycle like that normally.

The first thing to try is a "hard reset". Unplug it from the power line for a minute, plug it back in, set the clock, then try again.

Let us know if the hard reset doesn't fix it.

If you don't have your manual, you can download it free here. Check the lower right area to enter your model. number.
