Our washer gets an "F1" error message when it's got 17 minutes remaining in the complete cycle. any ideas?

My washer was purchased in March, 2007. I just spoke to Whirlpool and they said that the issue was NOT and never was involved in a recall. After telling them that I was looking at the internet and had several links to the BBB, they graciously agreed to a one time service repair at no cost to me. The initial operator knew exactly which code I asked about and immediately said that it was an electrical issue. He stated that there was nothing Whirlpool could do since I am out of my warranty period. He did offer to set up the repair service at cost to me. This was when I asked to speak to someone in the Consumer affairs group. They were courteous but as I said earlier, not willing to fix it until I threatened the BBB. Service call scheduled for Monday Jan 12. We'll see how that works out...

My machine shuts down at any time during the cycle and gives the "F1" error code. After turning it on and off a few times it will finish the load but it is getting frustrating. What type of electrical problem might this be?
A Whirlpool tech came out about a couple days ago and I finally have the machine that I paid for working again in my house! The tech came in with a part and was here for about 15 minutes changing the "brains" of the machine. Whirlpool covered the cost of parts and labor. It seems like this worked out pretty well, for now anyways.
