I have read your messages regarding conversion of the DC18RA charger. I have the same problem, but my DC18RA charger is slightly different: the capacitor (condensator) is 1000uF, 200V. Do I need to replace it with one that has larger capacity, or just with one that is for 380V and above, with the same capacity? Of course I would also change the varistor with one rated for higher voltage.

You can't use the same capacity as it gives you a very
large and expansive capacitor.
I used the max. diameter of 30mm that could go into the PCB of the model I have and it is 470uF 400V
You'll need to replace another capacitor, see my mod page !

Hey, I found it in a local electronics supply store.
35mm will NOT fit this PCB because of the metal heatsink and other nearby components.
The one I used 470uF-400V is 30.6mm diameter and I had to clean
some of the white adhesive Makita spread in this area in order to make room
for this large capacitor.
This capacitor is 30.6mm in diameter and is much longer ~50mm than the 35mm diameter type.
There is no problem with components height in this area.

If you want to go the safe way, you can use a lower uF value than 470uF and
you'll get a smaller in diameter capacitor. I didn't test this but reading other modding
pages it is said to be working as well.

My mod is clearly stating it is ONLY for this model as there are few on the market.
My page also recommend to replace 2 capacitors (not 1) and the MOSFET. You should check those as well.
and $40 for the components ? someone is making a lot of profit from you.

It seems to be almost cheaper to buy a new charger.
I have had a problem with replacing the large capacitor as I replaced it with a 200v unknowingly, the original was 250v! It went pop and smoke came puring out, it was a $15 cap that lasted about 1.5secs. I believe if you replace the large cap with a 400-450v 180uf-380uf and the varistor with one that will handle over 250v or something and make sure ur mosfet won't overheat, you should be fine... But I can't say just yet as I can't get another cap until after the weekend.
I purchased a new capacitor, varistor, fuse and a new plug and carefully soldered in the new parts. I connected a battery and with a long extension lead stood back. As soon as i flicked the switch on a tiny puff of smoke and a small pop came from the charger. I have spent hours trying to work out what went wrong. $40 in parts and it destroyed a perfectly new battery. Big disappointment.

Thank you very much for your effort. I will reward you for this. Where did you found the capacitor? It's very hard to find one with such characteristics. The smallest one I found has diameter 35mm.

You MUST change the capacitor for one that takes at least 380v, in fact I would even say a 450v would be one safe range in case of electrical spikes. The capasitator I used was 140uF and it was ok, so it seems it is not so important as the voltage in this case.
