Everstar Beverage/Wine Cooler HDBC36ID not cooling

My 14 months old Beverage/Wine cooler is not cooling anymore. My white whine side was set to 55F but know the temp is 65F and the red wine side was set up at 61F and now is 78F. I unplugged and took all the wine bottles out. What should I do?

Purchased Decelmber of 2007 so the age is past the one year warranty; put in service March 2008; now ten months later the wine cooler is not cooling.

  • kdlnet Jan 14, 2009

same problem. fighting the company now. I told them that this failure is not a brken handle. It is a total failure of the cooling system and that's not acceptable

  • Chiklee Jan 18, 2009

I have the same model - HDBC36ID, with the same problem. The left side (when facing it) runs but does not cool, is at 74 degrees. The right side cools when first plugged in (went to 39 degrees initially) but within 24 hours, it's running at 54 degrees when it is set at 37 degrees. The unit was purchased Dec 2007 and not put into service until Dec 2008 - it has never been used.

  • Jweidema Jan 26, 2009

I purchsed model HDBC36ID in September 2007 and it quite cooling Jan 2009. Everstar/Franklin Industries advised me to have Sears come out and assess the damage(for a fee on my dime) which I did. The tech from sears told me it would cost $394 to fix with parts and labor. That's 70% of what I paid for the unit. I'm afraid I'm going to take this one in the shorts and am really dissappointed that Home Depot would distribute such a poor product.

  • rona49x Feb 09, 2009

At least yours ran for a time. Mine failed to cool right out of the box. A great looking piece of junk.

  • mpberens Feb 13, 2009

I've had the service crew come out three times. Each time they claimed to find a new problem. Very disappointed on the purchase of this unit. The customer service has also been pitiful...

  • stevetheman Feb 14, 2009

Same model, same problem.   We've had the unit for just over a year and now it won't hold a temp below 63 degrees.  The repairman just came out, only to say it would cost more to fix than replace. Home Depot...no help at all

  • Anonymous Feb 16, 2009

Same problem as other comments ... water pooling on one side, gurgling sound, not cooling. One month past warranty. Would like to know if anyone has had theirs repaired sucessfully before I waste any more money.

  • Anonymous Feb 28, 2009

It appears the Everstar HDBC36ID is a lemon. I've had mine up and running for just over a year. I use it as a refrigerator for soda and beer. It was running like a champ until just recently. I placed it under a counter top leaving enough room to vent, but apparently this unit is not made for under counter storage. I pulled it out from under the counter and Whallah; it began to cool again, at least on the right side. I am still not able to get the left side below 54 degrees. I am extremely disappointed....What did I learn? Do your research before spending the money....Home Depot - - I see where you still have this same cooler in stock at one of your Georgia locations.....Send it back to Franklin Industries and either get out of the cooler resale business or stock your warehouse with a more dependable product....

  • brendankeefe Mar 15, 2009

LOOKS LIKE WE NEED TO START A CLASS ACTION SUIT.  I have the same problem, water started leaking/pooling in the right side of the unit from the beginning.  It stopped cooling effectively after about two months.

I can't get it to cool below 55 degrees on either side and the left side keeps giving me a warning alarm for excessive heat.

Anyone else want to hire a lawyer and start a class action?

  • Anonymous Mar 15, 2009

Same here...Left side=no cooling (64 degrees). Only difference is I didn't have a problem with water leaking. Stored unit out in the open, so it had more than adequate room to vent. [email protected]

  • NY103 Mar 17, 2009

Same Here- No Cooling! Repair Gut is in my kitchen and says for the price of repairs/Parts combined with other people's complaints we should just buy new one!

  • Anonymous Apr 07, 2009

ugggggh. I was so hoping that someone would have an answer!! mine too is one month past its warrenty and will not cool on either side but the left side is worse. I just had a regular fridge repaired that was doing the same thing, with a bad relay switch. After watching the service guy put it in ( for $300) it was sure if I knew that was the issue, I could have easily done it. does anyone haave a service manual with a description . I think a relay switch is pretty cheap.

  • ibd0632 Apr 14, 2009

Holy cow, we're all in the same boat here. Fortunately, mine started acting up in the first month, so I called for repairs. Five service calls and only 6 months later, the tech figured out it was a slow freon leak in the compartment walls. Franklin Industries replaced it with an upgraded  unit, although that one sounds like a MAC truck and I have another call into them for service on the new one.
I could kick myself every time I remember the day when I thought..."Oh, I'll put in a wine fridge..."

  • Anonymous Apr 19, 2009

I have the same issue as all of you. I purchawsed mine and 1year and 1 week to the date of purchase my left side stopped cooling. The right side works. What is everyone doing?

  • Anonymous Apr 26, 2009

I have the same unit...HDBC36ID...the first one made too much noise and I took it back immediately. The replacement has run about 15 months. The fans have always been noisy but at least it was cooling. Now I have a high temp alarm...are you kidding, this wasn't a cheap unit....looks great but breaking after the first year? If it cost me $100 maybe I would expect less but a $500 unit. I'm not happy.

  • Anonymous Apr 27, 2009

Same problem. Left one weekend to return and find the left side at 91 degrees and right side at 78 degrees. Franklin just told me that they have not received an unusual amount of issues with this product. Given the postings on this board, there is clearly a systemic problem. My unit is approximartely 1 year and 2 months old (e.g. no warranty)...any suggestions?

  • csmith3334 May 01, 2009

We are in the same boat. After about a year, it stopped cooling, and as one person said, when I pull it out from under the counter, it cools right down.

I agree, if anyone is willing to file a class action suit, I'm in!!!

Has anyone tried to go to Home Depot after the warantee runs out and get any relief?

  • rubinfa May 06, 2009

Neither side is cooling. Had the unit 11 months when it failed. Contacted Franklin's problem center and was told that a service person would contact us and have heard nothing, yet.

It's still under warranty so we'll see how long this takes. I'm not very patient when it comes to stuff like this so it won't be long before we take legal action against Franklin/Everstar.

  • mhaney1703 May 06, 2009

One year to the date. My wine cooler is not cooling. For a $500 wine cooler this is unreal.

Does anyone have a solution to the problem??

  • 123cason May 11, 2009

I can't believe I found this website...Our Everstar HDBC361D quit working after 17 months! I'm in for a class action lawsuit. I appears that Franklin knew they sold a defective unit.

  • Anonymous May 15, 2009

Same problem as all of you here... water (condensation) pooling on one side (mine happens to be the right side) and now that side is not cooling. This thing is only 10 months old - wish I had found this site a long time ago.

  • vwooley May 19, 2009

We are having the same problem with water collecting in the bottom of both sides and now the wine (left side) is not cooling well. I will try the phone numbers listed in one of the comments and see what happens.

  • Anonymous Dec 21, 2012

    Same problem!!

  • Anonymous May 30, 2013

I bought the Everstar hdbc36id wine cooler a few years ago at hime depot. It quit cooling in 30 days. I returned it and they gave me another one. That one lasted 2 months and it developed a water leak in the cooling system. Home depot replaced it again. The third one lasted 4 months and the cooling system failed. I took it back and home depot said they quit carrying it and couldnt help me. I called out a applicance repair co. They searched the parts and said they were obsolete and couldnt fix it.

I returned our unit to Home Depot with relative ease... I think they were all aware there is a problem with these units.

They refunded the full purchase price (even though I was well past the 12-month warranty period). I put the money toward a GE Profile unit that's a little bigger - more expensive, yes; but it works, priceless!

I know this post is a year old but here, Most likely the steel evaporator on the inside is leaking. Look for rust spots in the inside corners. Or inside the back unscrew the cover and look at the evaporator coil for rust spots. If it has any it has lost freon. To fix this a new evaporator needs to be made out of copper. I'm making one now, let you know if it works.
    Mike

  • donniebrazis May 09, 2011

@kermit12 I fixed one today given to me over 10 months ago. :) Nothing like a procrastinator. Yeah the evap is steel, and the leak in this one was on the right hand evap, where they wrapped the cap tube around it. I was able to repair it, I used Staybright for flux, and 45 to close the leak. We'll see how it goes.

  • Anonymous May 24, 2011

@kermit12 - Did your build of a copper evaporator work? It is looking like I am going to have to do the same thing and would love to pick your brain about this repair...

I had the same problem with the wine side not cooling after only a year and right after the warranty expired. After reading this webiste and seeing the similar problems other people were having I began making phone calls. First, I called 877-545-5445, and spoke with Eric, who is Director of Operations for Parts & Service, after several phone calls, I was told I needed a work order #, then I was transferred to 877-261-9867 to get a work order number. I spoke to Rosa, who was very helpful. I had to fax her my sales receipt from Home Depot, luckily I keep all home purchase receipts and faxed it to her at: 877-759-5113. I had to call repeatedly to get a work order number then when I received it from Rosa I then called Eric with the #. After about a week I received a call from the local repair company. As of today the repairman came but was sent the wrong board and they are supposed to have it overnighted to them in order to get this fixed. I will keep this sight updated on my progress but hopefully this will give you all some information and guidance on getting your wine cooler repaired.

  • Anonymous Jul 19, 2009

Franklin Chef has refused to repair my wine cooler. Plus the company that they contract with came out 4 times!!!! and said couldn't fix it. Then the company lied to the Franklin Chef and said that it was worked on by someone else before they got there!! Franklin Chef kept asking me if I had Sears come out. I kept telling them NO!! the company Tri-Cities Appliance Repair came and couldn't or was incapable of fixing it. This was a total runaround on all levels!! Even Tri-Cities repairman/owner said it was junk and was made in China!

Best solution is to junk it. I paid Sears $64.00 to check mine out ... needs new compressor plus other parts for total fix of $400. The serviceman said there is a rumor that Sears may decline working on Franklin products. I purchased a nice Danby wine cooler on sale from Werners Stellian for $500 ... free delivery and they took the junk away. It has two year warranty plus five years on the compressor.

Sorry to break it to y'all, but Everstar went out of business (probably bankrupt). There's nothing filing a lawsuit would do now.

  • thewinegirl Jun 27, 2011

This is a free standing unit. Do not build this into cabinets because it will get too hot & overheat the motor.

Bought same beverage/wine cooler. Issue was same. left side coil rusted through in less than 18 months. Left side fan also went bad. We own a Commercial Refrigeration company and would at least back our product. Seems to be coils are made out of inferior coated metal with plastic that rusted through. Would WE have know this as well would have left it on shelf at store.

We have a HDBC361D that has been growling for the six months since we installed it. Yesterday the warning beeper, which is very hard to hear, went off and I check it. Yikes! The left side was 71degrees and the right...80. My God, I didn't want to cook the wine. I check with Home Depot's Atlanta office and they said the original company was bankrupt (small wonder after the comments above) but that A&E Factory Service (1-800-950-8835) would know what to do. Our local HD also looked up my receipt on their data base. The manager of the local store called me this pm to check on progress. I called the number above and they are closed. I'll check on Monday. If it is going to cost an arm & leg, I'll go back to my local HD with my complaint about a very inferior product and copies of all the comments you folks have made above and see if I can get a replacement. Interesting that comments about this model date back to 2005. I should have checked before we bought it. We also had water on the front left and right that would pool up about once a week. We balanced it and still the same thing happened. Then the temp controls went haywire and we unplugged it. We have only had it operating for 6 months and only today have had to disconnect same.

here is a post i foud from another board. I probably will try this before junking my fridge
Update!

The fan i placed in the cabinet (typical portable fan) ended up really doing the trick. It immediately dropped and stabilized the temps of the cooler! I figured the Everstar just needs more circulation around the back of the unit, and sides. As it comes from the factory it is woefully equipped with such a small fan.

What my plan to do is, buy two 6" whisper quiet box fans and wire it to the outlet and mount them so that they move air around the compressor and case of the cooler.

This reallyyyyyyy should not be necassary when one buys a 500.00 wine cooler though...but i have little choice for another unit that will fit right into the cabinet already there. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2...an&parentPage=search

Plugged into outlet and i located it so that it blows out over the top of the cooler out through the gap above it. Vents in the bottom draw cool air in and keeps the air circulating. THis is a cheap and quiet fan that has worked so far for the heat issue with the Everstar in built in cabinets. I also put accoustic foam treatment around the walls to cut down on any noise from the cooler or the fan, which was not much...but i like things really quiet.

Same problems with my piece of junk Everstar.
FIRST - water inside.. Mine did this right after the warrenty ended. The compartments around the evaporators are not sealed properly. You get to the compartments from the inside (take out the selves and unscrew the back panels). Then just use waterproof silicon sealant/caulk to seal around the edges and around the drain (don't clog the drain!).

SECOND - stops cooling. Mine did this about 6 months later. I was so pissed I let it sit for 6 months before calling a repair man. Turns now now the evaporators are rusting all over. A pinhole leak developed. it was so small you couldn't see it. They had to use teh dye and still couldn't see it. They finally pulled out the evaporator out and used a spotlight to find the spraying mist.
Piece of junk.

We just had the same thing happen to us about a month ago. I heard the alarm going off, checked it out and noticed the temp was 80! we tried unplugging it overnight then plugging it back in. It worked for about a day at the usual temp, then spiked back up! Have decided after reading all these responses to go to Home Depot tomorrow, possibly buy a completely different one. Im all for a lawsuit on this company.

We bought two and BOTH quit working. The first died at 10 months and the other survived to the ripe old age of 18 months. A serviceman came out five times to fix the first one with no luck. During that time the serviceman was getting no support from Everstar. They finally came to the conclusion that the control board was faulty and nothing they could do.

Purchased in 2010. Temperature doesn't fall below 55F. Fan works. Sounds like compressor is working. Haven't physically inspected compressor. Used to cool to 39F.

May be both. Is the evaporator blocked or have ice built up on it? If so there could be two reasons for that. Low on freon or not enough airflow inside the cabinet.
