That error code is "SY" and not "5Y" and it is for the evaporator sensor error. You will need to replace the sensor. Here is the part to order.

The part comes with a 365 day, any part, any reason return policy.

Access the evaporator assembly cover in the rear of the freezer section. In convertible units that can function either as refrigerators or freezers, and is located toward the bottom of the unit on the inner back wall -- if necessary, remove the two lower glass shelves and the crisper compartments.

Remove the screws securing the evaporator cover to the freezer wall, using a Phillips screwdriver.

Pull the evaporator cover away from the wall just enough to access the electrical connection behind the cover. Be careful not to damage the gaskets on either side of the evaporator cover. Reach behind the cover and disconnect the electrical connection from its wiring harness. Remove the evaporator cover from the freezer.

Remove the wires inside the exposed evaporator assembly from their retaining clips, then squeeze the quick-connect mechanism to detach the wires from the fan motor.

Remove the two hex-head screws that hold the fan motor mounting bracket to the back wall of the unit, using a 5/16-inch socket or nut driver.

Remove the two hex-head screws holding the fan motor to the mounting bracket, using the 5/16-inch socket or nut driver, then pull the fan blade off the motor shaft.

Examine the fan to make sure the blades are not damaged; if necessary, replace the fan itself as well as the motor. Slide the fan onto the motor shaft.

Attach the new motor to the mounting bracket, using the 5/16-inch socket or nut driver to secure the two hex-head screws.

Replace and tighten the two hex-head screws that hold the fan motor mounting bracket to the back wall of the unit, using the 5/16-inch socket or nut driver.

Reattach the the fan motor wires by clipping them back into the quick-connect mechanism, and set the wires back into their retaining clips in the same manner as they were attached.

Set the evaporator assembly cover back into place, then reach behind and connect the electrical connection into the wiring harness.

Secure the Phillips screws that hold the evaporator cover to the freezer wall.

Replace the shelves and crisper compartments if they were removed, then plug the refrigerator into its power source and verify proper operation.

SOURCE: Kenmore Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

hi In some cases, a faulty thermostat may not be the cause of a warm refrigerator or freezer. A warm box may also be caused by a defective fan, a blocked fan, or broken or bent fan blades. If the blades are jammed, try to free them. If they're bent, straighten them with pliers. If this doesn't solve the problem, call a professional service person.

On some refrigerators, the door switch operates the evaporator fan. If the fan seems to be malfunctioning, the door switch could be faulty. Test the switch as detailed in the last page, and replace it if necessary.

Humming noise would be your compressor going bad. The noise from the fan is because they are over working to try and keep everything cool

SOURCE: Refrigerator isn't cold enough, but the freezer is

This problem is related to defrost. The defrost cycle is not running as it should be. The other possibility can be ice blockage in the ventilations. The defrost is not working,.The evaporator coil in the inner section of freezer is got blocked by ice .
Try manual defrost reset procedure: ----
First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. It will take near to 4 hours to get run in its proper cooling cycle. Then check, if the problem returns again. If the same problem occurs then it's defrost problem. The defrost board and the defrost thermostat/heater is not functioning properly and it has to be checked and replaced.
-------------------------------------------------
Check the damper if there is too much water collected in the damper then press the damper and remove the water collected in it. The procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the refrigerator section and the refrigerator section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located. Now this problem which you mentioned. In this problem the freezer works but no cooling in fridge, this happens if the thermostat is not functioning or the heater is not heating. Then the ice starts getting collected on the evaporator coil. The evaporator coil is at the internal section of freezer. If too much ice gets
collected then this ice blocks the fan in the freezer section from functioning and this blocks the damper section with ice getting collected there. This all procedure is controlled by the main defrost board of the unit. Now if the damper is not got blocked with too much water or if the ice is not got collected on the damper area then check the evaporator coils. If there is too much ice got collected on the coils, then takes a hair dryer and melt the collected ice. Then see if the problem returns again. But if there is little bit ice collected on the coils and fan is running properly then it's not a problem. In that case main defrost board is faulty and it has to be replaced. The main defrost board is working but its not controlling the functions as required so the freezer works but fridge section not getting cold..

Problem with refrigerator panel

'Make and Model' in all questions please. Generic answer for Frigidaire units.

The 5Y EF error code indicates an issue with or between the fan motor and the control board. I suggest check the wiring between evaporator fan and control board. Make sure everything is plugged in securely. You can also resent the appliance but cutting power off to the appliance for 5 mins to see if the code clears.

Have an error code of 5Y for freezer and CE for refrigerator. What's going on?

This issue, and potential explanations/solutions has shown up on prior Fixya before ... if your appliance is a Frigidaire/Iceland (you had not indicated).
The challenge after reading the prior post is that someone had success with just unplugging the unit and waiting for at least a day ... then replugging and the problem went away. Other solution is very costly ... having to replace a circuit board(s).
I tried posting the link ... but for some reason it would not work....so search the Fixya site for the 5Y CE error code and it should pop up
Good luck with your troubleshooting

My Frigidaire refrigerator that is in our cold garage has an error code of 5Y on the freezer side and EF on the frige side. What does this mean?

5Y ef means evaporator fan issue. Could be wiring to the evap fan as well.

From the site: "I had a 5y ef error and it ended up being the control board."

Here's a link to a really good video:

My error code says 5Y on freezer and EF on frig? What does this mean?

This error code is most often linked to a defective evaporator fan motor. This is the fan located in the freezer, behind the back wall.

5y CE code on frigidaire refrigerator water/ice dispenser

Dear Sue,
  • SY CE Error Codes is a very common issue : the display board isn't communicating with the main PCB.
  • Unfortunately, there is no way to test which board is causing the problem. That's why this error can be costly.
  • Try to just unplug the refrigerator for 15 minutes and plug it back in to see if the error goes away.
  • If the issue doesn't go away, then you'll need to replace one or two boards.
  • Usually the Main Control Board under the refrigerator behind the kick panel is the part that tends to fail.
  • If you Change the Main Board, it does not work; you gonna have to replace the Display Board.
  • Try buying these board at an online store that accept Returns without conditions up to a year. Go online and put the boards number into any major search engine. Put the # one by one. You will find many sellers. Carefully pick one and do you homework
Good luck and keep me posted please,
JP

I have a Maytag refrigerator similar to the current model (GS2625GEKS), I purchased mine in 2003. Serial number unknown. All of a sudden my freezer is way too cold and my refrigerator is not cold enough....

If the number is similar we will have to go with possibilities. Sound like the auto damper has frozen itself shut between the fresh food and freezer compartments. Some are controlled electrically some manually and others are controlled with a thermostat probe. Your thermostat for one side could be defective and not allowing the damper to open. Your refrigerator must have the correct model number to proceed. What I need you to do is look for the vent through the rear of the refrigerator compartment and sometimes leads directly from the same wall as freezer. Many Maytag brands fall under same series and model similarities. The serial number is not as important to the service Tech as the model number. Look around the door frame near floor and kick plate.I can help but I will need the correct model number, Thanks, Sea Breeze
