SOURCE: Start > turn off computer does not work on XP

Some process running in the background is not letting the system shut down. Use task manager to kill unnecessary processes before pressing turn off. If it shut downs then try to locate the process using taskmanager which is causing this problem.

Let me know if it helps.

SOURCE: Acer Aspire One wont turn on

Hi there
It sounds like the hard drive is faulty and has some bad sectors on it. Take the hard drive and boot the machine to rule out any other possibilities of problems with the laptop itself, if it stays on and just says hard disk not found you know its the hard drive.
You need to have the hard drive checked for possible bad sectors and have them repaired or maybe even have to purchase a new drive.

Good luck

  2. Type regedit in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow

It seems that your OS has registry problem, there are only two ways to fix it:-

    1) Re-install your Windows with Re-partition your drives (In that case you have to take backup of your all data.)

    2) Start PC in Safe mode, then download a reliable program like i always use Reginout to fix my OS registry properly.
