My Toshiba Tecra A8 PTA83A-04F012 won't boot. When I boot my machine, I get the normal Toshiba splash screen, then the screen goes blank with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Apart from the CPU fan kicking in, nothing else happens. I've tried to boot from an alternative device (eg CD-ROM), but the same problem happens. I've even tried to get into the bios (setup) but it ignores my requests. The keyboard seems to work OK. Please help.
You can boot from XP cd. When prompted..press [R] this will launch recovery console. Choose your windows installation (typically by pressing [1] press return.. When prompted for password type chkdsk /r Press return..Windows will fix errors..type Exit and press return.. Let me know if that helps.
This won't even boot from the cd-rom it just goes to the blank screen wanting me to enter a password. What do I do?This won't even boot from the cd-rom it just goes to the blank screen wanting me to enter a password. What do I do?

Toshiba tecra a8
what pass word.?
BIOS
or windows, if using windows, unstated. (windows login screen?)
if not login screen for windows seen that means its a BIOS PASSword. not good that.
first ones run XP, do you still run this? old virus magnet OS?
why not ask TOSHIBA this, they made it, not us.
Well, it sounds like you have a hardware problem. Start by removing the Ram and hard Drive from the machine and insert a boot disk. If your not getting the Tecra Splash screen when you press the power button, the screen that appears before the windows boot screen, you may have a bad Monitor or Burned background lamp or faulty BIOS install or upgrade. Any of which will give you this problem.
At what stage did you reboot? Did you boot from the xp install cd to install?
What you want to do is boot from the cd and then have xp reformat the drive. That will give you a clean virus free system. If you started the install from windows by just inserting the cd then you may not actually get rid of any hidden viruses or rootkits or other nasties.
The only problems with reformating is that you may loose documents and so on if you have just the one drive. On my A8 I put a 320 gb drive in but it is paritioned to C D Eand F drives. I do not store anything on drive C and I have a set of drivers saved off on one of the other drives. So if I have a problem that my antivirus won't kill then I reformat, reinstall and am back up and running within a few hours. This is how we setup any client machines that want to make sure they loose as little as possible if they have problems.
On a A8 booted from the CD it should take about 25-30 minutes from the time you boot until you are up in Xp . At that point you need to install the motherboard INF files , the video driver and the network drivers and then everything else. Those three are the critical ones.
From your description I would suggest you try installing again. I just saw this so you may have fixigured out the solution to it. Just make sure it is plugged it and let it grind away. The odd one will take a long time but normally that 35 mins is about bang on.
You need to goto
the manufacturers website, find their support section and there should be a
list of drivers for your specific machine. Installing these should resolve your
problem. I have a list of links to most manufacturers drivers on my website.
Hope this helps,

You need to have a working CD/DVD Installer of your OS like Windows Vista or Windows XP or the like.
Now, you need to start your laptop while the disc installer is in your CD/DVD Drive. Then it will automatically boot from the CD/DVD drive to start the installation. Just follow the on-screen procedures.
