Nathaniel, DVD RW have the capability of playing any CD. If you are facing problem then either:

a) Your CD is not right or has too much scratches on it.
b) Your DVD RW Lens has gotten a bit weak. Clean your DVD RW lens and then give it a try.

SOURCE: Replacing CD-RW/DVD Drive

I own a Presario F730US. I have had it apart many times and it is a difficult case to open. There are several ribbon cables that are easily damaged if you are not very careful. You have to pop up the speaker cover panel as there are case screws under it as well. Once inside you will see the screws that retain the optical drive. Once you remove them it will slide right out and the new one will slide right in. I can not overstate how careful you have to be. If you are not 100% sure of yourself I would recomend that you take it to a repair shop and let a qualified tech assist you. The screws you need to get to are under the keyboard. The whole laptop does not need to be disassembled to swap the drive. Once you pop the speaker bazel and the keyboard you are home free. If you need more help feel free to ask.

SOURCE: My Dual Layer DVD±RW for my presario v2410us will not read CDs

It happens in combo drives where the cd reading wont work and still read or burn dvd's or vice versa. If you tried to use a cd cleaner and still didnt work then the cd reader is already busted. it either you replace it a new one or not.

Cds wont play in dvd-rw player

The only discs that a DVD player is guaranteed to read are DVD discs. Support for CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW may be included, but is by no means guaranteed.

CD-R was designed to be read by an infrared 780nm laser. DVD uses a visible red 635nm or 650nm laser, which aren't reflected sufficiently by the organic dye polymers used in CD-R media. As a result, many DVD players can't read CD-R media. Some DVD players come with two lasers so that they can read CD-R.

But as I have already stated that Most DVDs today have the tendency of playing CDs. So if your DVD player is new then it must have that support. Have a look at the quality of your CDs also.

My cd drive will read cds but wont read as a burner

Not all Inspirons have CD burners (the 4 factory options were CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, and DVD/CD-RW. You can confirm that via Windows Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and double click on DVD/CD-ROM drives to see what model drive you have, then just Google it to see what it's capable of.

In case you have either a CD-RW type drive or a DVD/ CD-RW drive and it doesn't want to burn CD's , then it's a bad drive.

My CD/DVD drive won't read/play DVDs and it won't write DVDs either. It used to do this fine, but it doesn't anymore. It will still play and write CDs, but not DVDs. I have tried EVERYTHING to...

You probably will need to replace the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) in your laptop. Go to Google and search for "Dell Inspirion 6000 CD/DVD drive" to find a replacement.
To be sure it's the CD/DVD drive that's defective and not your operating system software, you could also try to boot from a boot-able DVD disk.

Ok i asked before if my drive will burn both dvd and cd. the answer was yes. but when i installed the drive and ran my dvd creator program. it said this drive is dvd read only.

Hi mikey7420 ,

The drive name itself is the clue to know whether it can burn dvds or not.

  • In your case it's a CD-RW (read and write or rewritable) and DVD-ROM (Read only memory and not read and write or rewritable as in the case of CD)
  • Perhaps the one who told you did not understand your question properly , and understood it , in the sense that it can read CDs as well as DVDs , as far as Dvd-ROM drives are concerned many shopkeepers who are especially new working in the shop just make a guess and answer our question which could lead to this misunderstanding or incorrect information being passed on.
  • So the next time you buy a DVD drive which should have a read and write functionality as well , then look up for a CD_RW,DVD-RW drive.
  • Also remember that DVD-RW drive can by default read and write CDs as well , but it's not true for CD drives..
  • So usually a DVD-RW drive can read and write Cds as well as DVDs but a CD-RW drive can either read or read and write a DVD depending on whether it's a DVD-ROM or DVD-RW.
Hope this helps.

It doesnt read any dvd neither software nor video, but can read audio cds, vcds, and mp3s

Put a DVD disk into the drive.
Open "My Computer".
Right-mouse click on the icon for the CD/DVD drive.
Click "Explore".
If a window opens, then your hardware can read the DVD media.
If not, then you need to replace the CD/DVD drive.

Then, you need software, such as the _free_ 'VLC' software,
downloadable from the Internet, to play DVD-videos on your computer.

My samsungsd616tdvd drive cannot play or read dvd-rw cds.

Please note that the formats of DVD and CD are quite different. Whereas a DVD drive can handle both DVD and CD, a CD drive can only handle cd formats. Furthermore, a drive that reads both formats does not necessarily mean it can handle the writing aspect ok. You need a drive that is capable of writing/burning DVD. Most drives that come along with pcs can only write CDs but able to read both. So check your drive to see whether or not it can write on DVDs ok. Good luck

My dvdrom drive wont let me access the drive

ITs a dvd rom drive. It will not burn blank dvds
in order to burn, it has to cd-r/cd-rw/dvd-r/dvd-rw. If a drive cannot write to a blank disc, it will eject it. Rom drives read only (Read Only Memory), Combo drives- burn cd's only read dvd's, and super drives both read and write to cds and dvds.

Cant play DVD on CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive

Assuming you have tried different makes of cd or dvd disks, it's a classic drive failure problem where the laser can no longer burn or read dvd's, but may still be able to read cd's only. You will have to replace the drive, they are quite inexpensive, and very easy to fit.
