I have 1983 john deere 420 garden tractor that starts and idles fine but when you try to move the hydrostatic lever or engage the front or rear PTO it stalls out. I've already tried cutting seat switch wires and wiring them together to bypass, also tried a new micro switch at lever, but didn't test battery but it seams to be ok.

The PTO usually has a clutch that has to be engaged so that you can select the PTO rotation setting. I had a problem like that on my tractor and all it needed was a little adjustment on the PTO clutch lever, so it could disengage the PTO gearbox properly.

its likely to be a switch playing you up try hard wireing the switch to see if it stops this cutting out first, do one switch at a time till you fine the one playing up

Park brake switch is the most likely culprit, any other would cause the tractor to not turn over in the crank position.
