When I try to boot up the laptop it turns on but the screen stays blank. I have tried using an external moniter, flicking through F5, replacing the RAM and nothing seems to be working. The caps and number lock lights won't turn on when I press them so I don't think that it is booting up as usual.
Try hitting the escape button several times at power on. This will put you into the bios of the unit. Try reseating the ram you installed.
Hello Cobi, this problem is caused by the RAM problem, I know you changed it, but are you sure you used the correct one? ( it's a simple question ). If we use the right one and continue the problem then we should check other RAM connection elements.
This video can help to review the procedure.

Try this:
Remove all connectors, media and devices (cables, USB devices, floppies, CDs etc)
1. Press AND hold the power button for 10 seconds. Light should go out.
2. Remove battery.
3. Plug in PSU (the AC power supply unit)
4. Press power button.
5. If the laptop starts, go all the way to desktop and run the laptop for 20 minutes or so.
6. Shut down and remove PSU.
7. Re-attach PSU and then insert battery.
8. start laptop. If it starts, go all the way to desktop and use laptop for an hour or so, to monitor the battery state, see if it is charging. If it is, go to step 9. If not, test PSU and battery, to see which needs replacement.
9. Otherwise open START MENU/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL/POWER SETTINGS.
10. Uncheck HIBERNATION in the tab that applies.
11. Set all spin down, sleep/suspend and monitor settings to "never".
12. Apply/OK and Close Power CP
13. Now leave laptop on, let the laptop sit, idle (or use it) for at least 3 hours.
14. Shut down and remove PSU, then restart.
15. If the laptop will not start, or did not show a full charge before shutting down, replace the battery.
16. Go back and set spin down/suspend and monitor power settings to DEFAULT, but do not use hibernation any more on a 3 year old laptop!

You need to hold down the FN button and hit F8, let go, then leave it for a couple of seconds and keep trying till an image comes up. and if that doesn't work, give it a try with all of the F buttons. OR you just have a broken laptop

You would be well advised to hit F8 and do a safe mode. Then check the disk. More details here: http://annoyances-resolved.blogspot.com/2009/09/laptop-wont-boot-and-shows-blank-screen.html

Shut down the laptop, make sure that no light is lit up. Before booting it back up, press and hold the F12 button. It will lead you to boot options. Open up your DVD drive and insert Disc 1 of recovery then make sure you select the ODD or the dvd drive to boot up. This will start the recovery process.
Other models has Icons for boot options. Make sure you select the single disc option to boot the ODD.
Hope this helps.

Remove all power sources.
Remove hard drive and Ram.
Fit AC adapter and press on. If the laptop complains as there are now no periferals, power down the laptop.
If it still dosn't power up at all, you have a motherboard fault and cannot continue. A Toshiba Computer Repair Cetre will help you out.
If it did work;
Disconnect power source.
Fit RAM and try again. If that still works but now states that there is no OS, power it down and with power source removed fit the hard drive.
Power up again with AC Adapter. Hope fully all now should be well or at least you now know where your fault lies.
I hope that helps.

A coupla' more simple things to check; 1) Remove the Harddrive, and plug back in. 2) Unplug the AC adapter (Charger) from the laptop, while plugged into power, plug back into laptop. 3) And don't be hatin', but remove the Ram Memory again, (ALL power removed from laptop), and clean the gold plated contact pins, with a pencil eraser. Use air to remove the eraser dust, reinstall. Also how dirty is the laptop inside? Look through the round Intake Port (Fan), on the bottom of the laptop with a flashlight. Post back in a Comment.
