In alarm mode, the up button turns the alarm on and off. There are three alarms available. To cycle though alarm times, press set. To set an alarm, press and hold set until the time flashes, then set the alarm time using the up button, cycle through hour and minutes using the set button. When finished, press set again.

To check heart rate, press and hold mode until PUL is shown, place two fingers, one each on the top and bottom metal contacts for 6-10 seconds to get reading (This works best when not in motion).

New battery needed and fitted to a Polar heart rate monitor

This is really easy to do yourself. Get a CR1632 battery, unscrew the four screws on the back (dont tip the watch as there is a small spring in the watch), unclip the metal band holding in the old battery noting the way 'round the battery is in (minus side up), pop in new battery and push clip back down, when re-fitting the back make sure the spring mentioned earlier lines up with the white sticker with a hole in it on the inside of the watch back, screw down the back. After you have re done all your settings you may need to re-aquaint the watch with the strap, to do this put on the watch and strap, set the heart monitoring going, bring the watch up close to the 'Polar' logo on the chest strap until the time is displayed, should now be all set up.

I have a mio euorfit heart monitor watch. During my workout I

Yes, you definetely need battery replacement.
As the hart rate monitoring is most sophisticated part of the device, it has more IC (Integrated Circuits) than any other features.
More IC's means more power is needed, so, if the heart rate monitor is starting to malfunction, that's the very first sign of underpowered battery.
Find your nearest watch repair shop and ask for battery replacement.

Do not forget to rate, please.
