The big control levers off, but the small one only comes off once you have removed the screw and have it in the down position.

SOURCE: Makita HP1640 hammer drill dual mode - 2 hours

Exchanged Makita HP1640 hammer drill for a new one. The 2nd drill did the same thing in under an hour!! Will return for refund. Instructions say the Forward/Reverse switch must be in a full up or down position for the Hammer/Rotary switch to move; well, it is and the Hammer/Rotary switch still stops at a 1/2 way point between modes. Although I can still use the drill, instruction warnings say not to because it may potentially burn out the motor. I'll have to go with a different brand this 3rd time around. It seems to be a design flaw.

SOURCE: I've got a Makita HR3000c and it won't hammer.

more than likely the o rings are worn such that it won't seal. You can go to Makitatools.com and download a breakdown for this tool and see all the parts needed to rebuild. Let me know if you need more assistance.

SOURCE: how do you remove the

Removing the change lever:
Set change lever at neutral position (arrow pointing down) and insert a slotted screwdriver into the back of the lock button. Slightly hit the screwdriver with a plastic hammer to remove it. Good luck with your repair.

How to remove field coil from makita hr3000c drill/breaker

Here is a parts breakdown for your drill. Of course the armature has to be removed first. There are two screws holding the field. It should just push out at this point. If not, the housing may be melted to it. Good luck with that. https://www.ereplacementparts.com/makita-hr3000c-rotary-hammer-parts-c-97_380_507.html
