I know the primary chain tension is 5/8

I noticed a light noise and to day within 45 miles, ti seemed to get louder, and it has been hard to get in neutral after a run. but there is no glitter in oil, nor shavings, I was going to adjust the clutch after 5,000 miles after I put in the soft pull. Bike has 18,000. and yes I do work it, as a mechanic it is well maintained but a friend borrow my book and yesterday and to day I need it. and he is out of pocket due to a job. I know I should remember but this has been a 37 hour day. Just need some info. tonight!

SOURCE: cannot get bike into neutral with engine running but can find neutral fine with engine off

Well, there is still a chance that what you have is a stretched cable, not a thin clutch pack. I'd at least try rigging a spacer inline with the cable to see if more cable travel helps! Good luck, let me know where you go from here, and I'll follow this question. THanks, TT

SOURCE: I have a 2000 FXST

The primary chain is supposed to have 5/8 to 7/8 inch up and down play in the top run of the chain with the engine cold. I think it's 1/2 to 5/8 inch hot but I've never set the tension on a hot primary chain.

But, if you say you heard a crunching noise, then the engine started running rough and popping out the exhaust, I'd suspect something to do with the ignition timing. The ignition timing is controlled by the pulses from the crank position sensor on the right flywheel.

If I were you, I'd pull the primary cover, take the compensator sprocket, primary chain, and clutch assembly off, pull the rotor and the stator of the alternator. Then pull the sprocket shaft seal out and take a look at the Timken bearing. While you've got everything off, take the plugs out and turn the engine over and feel for any roughness. It may be time for an engine overhaul. I've only seen Timken bearings fail in one Shovelhead engine but they do fail. Hopefully, you'll find something much simplier and less expensive than this wrong.

Good luck
Steve

Engine chain type noise at low rpm engine has approx 40 thousand kilos on a 2008 electric glide classic

Have you checked the tension on the primary chain lately? Take the oval shaped inspection cover off the the primary cover on the right side of the bike. Check the tension on the top run of the primary chain in the middle of the run. You should have between 5/8" (15.8mm) to 7/8" (19.0mm) with the engine COLD. To adjust loosen the nut that holds the primary chain shoe in place and raise the plate to tighten the chain, lower it to loosen. Since working through the inspection cover hole is tedious, some people elect to take the outer primary cover off and then set the tension. Refill the primay with 36 to 42 ounces of the appropiate oil. Harly uses H-D Syn3 20W50 synthetic engine oil in the primary.

If the noise seems to be coming from the right hand side of the engine, it could be the cam chain tensioner and shoe. To repair this requires going into the cam chest. This is something that I do not recommend for the amateur mechanic. There are also some special tools required to work in this area.

I hope this helps

Purchased a york hydraulic primary chain tensioner for my 2005 HD vtwin and it came with no instructions. Believe I have it installed correctly but any particulars for adjustments I need to know about....

Once they're installed, they usually self adjust from what I've been told. It works hydraulically. As the spring pushes up on the bottom side of the primary, the sucks oil in to keep the tension on the chain.

I've heard from some that they have noticed a bit more noise from the primary due to the added tension on the primary chain. Personally, I guess I'm just "old school". It ain't too much trouble to check the chain tension every two or three thousand miles. But, then again, I work on the things for a hobby.

1550 motor makes noises

most left hand noises invole the compensating sprocket/alternator area, and back along the primary chain to the clutch hub. bearing failure would be noticed at low rpm, so i doubt this problem has anything to do with your 1550 kit

Loud tick & knocking for a 1zzfe engine from 2001 toyota corolla

from what you are describing it sounds like a lifter/valve issue, i am a ford man i don't know if toyota do the same thing, but if they use inserts for the valve seats it is possible a valve seat has been dropping just has not dropped fully out to cause engine damage. buying a new engine will actually cost you less than an overhaul/rebuild anymore. the parts will cost you almost as much as a new motor will with all the machining that maybe needed.

Primary drive

Most likely what has happened is that the tensioner bolt has backed out a bit, and is causing the primary chain to bump the case. I've had a few bikes that this has happened with. It won't cause any real damage, just a few scrapes on the inner primary, but you do need to get it right. I recommend that you replace the factory tesioner with a Hayden M6 automatic tensioner. This way you will never have to adjust it again, and it will always be adjusted properly. Occasionally you will have to replace the springs, about every 7 to 10 years, otherwise it takes care of itself.
