John Deere L120 runs for 15 minutes, bogs down and dies. A few minutes later starts right up, runs for a few minutes and dies again. I have changed the fuel filter, all fuel lines, air filter, cleaned the gas cap. When the engine starts to die I remove the gas cap but does not help. I also replaced the fuel pump. Any suggestions?

Is this an older machine ? If so try finding the points its usualy on the front lower part of the engine behind the cover, if you see that then it needs its condensor replaced, lookes like a round battery.

If this is newer or you can also try changing the spark plug sometimes they heat up and fail.

Loosen fuel cap 1 turn to see if it will stay running.Theres a tank breather hole/vent in the cap and when it becomes plugged no air can get into fuel tank when fuel is used, can also be a plugged fuel filter.

I will assume you have bled the fuel system per the owners manual to ensure no air lock in your system. This is especially critical after replacing the injector pump.

The next step is to ensure you fuel filters are good and flowing and last but probably the problem is the screen on the petcock (fuel shut off) in the fuel tank. Remove this shutoff valve and clean the screen with a fine wire brush and carburetor cleaner.

SOURCE: john deere 42 inch,17.5 hp-was running good then

have you had a look at carb side of things as it may be having fuel starvation probs.. the fuel in line not getting through jets or float chamber cleanly.. also the tank might have contamination from rust or debris..

SOURCE: Have a Sears lawn tractor,

You are going to need to have the carburetor replaced or rebuilt. If that model has a fuel tank under the seat and a feed hose from that to the carburetor replace that hose as it has gunk from old fuel built up slowing the flow of gas. What is happening is the motor starts and uses the fuel in the Carburetor bowl and then dies. the vacuum pulls enough to refill the bowl after a second or two and then it happens again. I had this same problem with a Craftsman ones and had to go through this, very frustrating.

SOURCE: i have a John Deere

I am an ex-z820a owner because these machines are terrible. Deere issued a PIP for these motors and maybe yours has not beed done yet. The best thing to do is get with a dealer see if the PIP has been completed then sell as fast as you can. I traded my z820a on a z920a and couldnt be happier.

John deere mower Won't start

Sounds like the carb is varnished up and needs to be rebuilt. They make rebuild kits depending on the carb number and you can rebuild it.

Lack of power after running for 15-20 minutes.

It sounds as though the ground travel belt (Drive belt) is slipping, you didn't mention the engine was bogging down so that is what comes to mind first. adjust the tension or replace the belt and if it is slipping that will remedy the issue.

My John Deer L120 riding mower is shutting down

Two things to consider....fire and fuel. Lets start with the simplest....check and replace the fuel filter, drop bowl off the bottom of carb to make sure float is working properly. If this dosen't work...your looking at a new coil. Some coils will go quickly where others are gradual. As they heat up...they will stop working until allowed to cool down again. www.nnyparts.com

John Deere L120 appears to run out of gas

This is the most common problem with the L120 I'm told. The pin hole in the gas cap needs cleaning (top and underneath as well). I have replaced mine twice already and have only 140 hrs. on it. Starts right up after cleaning. (My symptoms were identical to yours)
