My Toshiba Satellite will start clicking (sounds like in the bottom left side) - it actually will click 10 times, then stop for a couple of seconds, then start up again. When it's clicking, it will drain the battery - even with AC plugged in. Eventually, it will drain it all the way down to 0%, at which time it will shut down completely. If I pick up the laptop, and turn it from side to side, upside down, and shake it back and forth, I can eventually get the clicking to stop, at which point, the battery starts recharging and it runs fine. We initially thought it was an overheating problem - checked the fan, completely took the laptop apart and cleaned everything, got a base with external fan for it to sit on, checked the temps - no overheating and no fix. Next we replaced the battery thinking that was the problem - still clicks and shuts off. We have checked for viruses, even formatting the drive and starting over with a clean install - no fix. We replaced the hard drive - no fix. So, this is where we are now - always checking to see if it's clicking, and if it is, turning the laptop upside down, moving it from side to side,... until the clicking stops, then we're fine and can use the laptop for hours. What could this clicking and draining the battery be?

Plug it into the electrical outlet and then turn on your laptop. if it comes on and works fine, then your battery is just simply dead, and if it will charge, just needs to charge. If not, then you are going to have to replace your battery. But assuming all of this is true, and your laptop will power on when using your electrical outlet, then yes, feel free to use it whenver you like when plugged in.

That's just the way Windows works when power is cut off. You should set your Control Panel/Power settings to put the PC into hibernation if it's left alone for too long.

How about this step, try to turn off the laptop itself. Remove the cables and battery just like what you did before, then press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. Then, reinsert the cables and battery on the laptop and then turn on the computer itself. If the laptop restarts, shuts down or freezes with the AC power cables, two things that you should seriously consider. It might be the power cable itself, AC cable port or the circuitry going to the motherboard. And since you have cleaned out the fan and heat sink, you have isolated that problem. Have you plug-in another power cable on your laptop? If yes, then check if it works. Otherwise, the main issue is that the AC port is loose or the circuitry of AC adapter going to the motherboard is not not working. You can re-open the unit and check the circuitry from the AC port going to the motherboard. You may check the circuitry from AC port to the power supply if it is ok. If symptom persist, please contact your local dealer...

I would try a freh AC Adapter as it may well be the cause of your problems!
I decided to use a shop vac to suck the dust out and it worked. I tested it by letting the machine run all night and it worked. It's been a couple of weeks now and I'm glad I did it. I was ready to take the machine apart, now I'm glad I didn't. I'd suggest you use a heavy duty shop vac to clean out the fan and heat sinks first.I agree. Try to fix the problem without taking the laptop apart first but I would recommend using a powerful air compressor instead of a vacuum cleaner.
If your laptop is still under warranty, you can take it to any Toshiba Authorize Service Provider and fix the problem at no charge to you.
