check the switch under the seat you can jumper that one with a paper clip to test it

Tried it. Turns out it was the voltage regulator. Problem solved but I took it to the local shop. Thanks anyway.

Replace the switch on the brake/clutch it is a dual switch so it can crank and still be bad

  • Anonymous Sep 05, 2012

Thanks Mike. The interlock switch that I replaced is for the clutch brake. I'm suspecting the problem is the electric clutch because it cranks & starts but dies when I let off of the clutch.

Try putting a jumper wire on the wire going from the engine to the seat. Take that plug and put a wire from one side to the other. Be careful not to cut your feet off when engaging deck.

It's not a good idea. But if you must, it's just a switch. If it has two wires, cut them from the switch and connect them together with a wire nut. If it has only one wire, then cut it from the switch, put a spade terminal on it, and connect it to the frame of the tractor.

Testing the PTO clutch and wiring.
1) A voltmeter or test light is a MUST.
2) Starting at the clutch, there is a connector from the wiring harness.
a) one wire will have voltage, the other is a ground wire
**NOTE: a person must be in the seat, pto turned on. DO NOT start the engine, but have the key in the run position as if you were mowing.
If there is voltage in the wiring harness connector, the problem is the clutch assembly.
If NOT, then
3) check for voltage from the back of the pto switch (normally, the switch can be removed by depressing the holding tabs on it's sides, so that you can access wires easily)
a) you will have a supply wire from the ignition switch, and a wire that goes to the clutch harness. with the switch on, you should have voltage on at least 2 wires. The other wires are the seat safety/start circuit and are not part of this test.
b) If you have battery voltage coming into the switch, but nothing coming out, the switch is bad.
c) if you do not have any voltage supply, then
4) check the ignition switch, does it have a battery source voltage, and in the run position, it normally will have an 'A' terminal that supplies the pto switch
* note
5) many times the internal terminals of the igniton switch can fail to supply voltage to the pto switch
** I am assuming the supply to the ignition switch is good, because otherwise you would not be able to start the tractor..

Find the solenoid and on the side the battery cable is hooked to is another smaller red wire that has the inline fuse on it.

Mower shuts off when I let off the brake/clutch or engage the pto

The symptoms are a operator not in seat.

The seat switch requires a normally closed switch that opens when seat occupied. See attach.

Mower wont start but when i run wire from battery to starter it starts but when you let out the clutch it dies

You bypassed the start safety and it starts/runs so battery and starter work along with kill. The first fault symptom is it will not crank engine?

If yes, suggest you troubleshoot the no crank. The typical start safety interlock is brake ON (clutch disengaged) and PTO off (some require seat occupied). You will need trace the the start engine circuit beginning with the S pole of the start switch through the entire safety interlock. Likely this will require a schematic of the interlock circuit as it is mfg specific.

My Husqvarna YTH24K48 won't turn over. When I turn the key to the first notch, I hear one click. When I go ahead and turn the key to the start position, nothing happens.

Check that the interlock on the seat is connected. Mine failed in the same way a while back and all that was wrong was a broken wire to the interlock switch on the seat. This is designed to stop the engine if you get off the mower.

Husqvarna yth2148 mower dies when clutch is released or deck is engaged. has new seat switch, clutch switch and pto switch whats my solution

Has the belt been replaced recently? A two small belt with kill the motor due to too much tension on the driveshaft. Also make sure blades spin relatively well. I'd be looking for excess tension.

I have a 6 year old Craftsman rider, model 27363 w/18.5 HP Briggs engine and 42'' deck. I tried to start but nothing - no click, ammeter doesn't move, hour meter doesn't run. Checked battery, have 12.8...

The start circuit usually only goes through the clutch/brake switch, and the clutch switch. That way it won't start if the clutch isn't depessed (brake on) and the mower deck turned off. You can test for voltage on the s terminal (start) on your switch. then for 12V+ at the clutch brake switch, then at the clutch switch, finally at the solonoid. The seat switch usually only kills the ignition if you have the PTO engaged, and you leave the seat.

My Craftsman Model #917.270662 42" 15.5 HP will start, but when I release the clutch/brake pedal it shuts off. Does the clutch need replaced??

No! It is probably the seat interlock switch. Tip up the seat and look underneath. Do you see that gray or white plastic switch with two wires going into it? That is it! You can go on Searspartsdirect and price up a replacement and have it sent to your house.
