Suet can be made by combining 1 part birdseed to an equal amount of beef fat, lard, or natural peanut butter. Form into cakes.

The word is actually jargon for bird lovers. It is not the same suet used in human cookery.

Suet is a type of bird food used to attract insect-eating birds such as chickadees, mockingbirds, warblers and kinglets. The suet is usually formed in to lard filled cakes and given to birds for food. Here are a few great brands worth checking out -

If I want to put out bird seed as a treat for the birds, how do I hang it? I don't want to use a table, I want to hang it from the trees.

There are recipes for homemade bird seed treats that involve suet or some other sticking agent that keeps it together so you can hang it in a lump. But I came across a very cute web posting with a recipe for a bird seed treat that is heart shaped! Check out this link http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/activities/crafts/wild-bird-treat/

What should I prefer for my birds, straight or live food?

I don't know what type of birds you have but you should know that Live foods are very beneficial to birds. If you think about it, that's part of their diet in the wild. Live foods are important sources of protein for young birds as well as attractive and nutritious.

Basically, I would mix grains and straight food with live food for their diet.
