First off unplug ref and melt the ice with a blow dryer.then check your defrost circuit,it is easier to check with the ice gone.

do you know how to use a multi meter?unplug the referidge and check to make sure there is not a open defrost thermostat and/or open heater. on the meter is will be around o ohms if it is infinite then that component is no good. the defost thermo is in line with the heater so unplug one side of the defrost tsat away from the heater and you can test both at 1 time let me know what you get for readings,

SOURCE: KENMORE MODEL 596 BOTTOM FREEZER, FRIDGE NOT COOLING

The freezer will stay cold because a small amount of cold air will be forced through the frost but that will not be enough to make it up to the refrigerator portion. You can defrost the unit by removing the metal panel and allowing the frost to melt. Careful use of a hairdryer can speed up this process. This will likely be a temporary fix. The root cause of excessive frost can be caused by a bad door seal or a defective defrost circuit.

First check that the door seal is good by closing the door on a dollar bill at several points around the door, both on the freezer and refidgerator door. If you can pull the bill out with no resistance, the door is not making a good seal. Inspect the seal and make sure there isn't anything stopping the door from closing such as food, or a shelf not pushed in all the way.

If the door seal is good, the defrost system is likely defective. The defrost system has three main parts, the defrost heater, thermostat, and timer. None of these parts are particularly expensive, or difficult to replace you feel comfortable with repairing it yourself. If you can troubleshoot this by manually starting the defrost cycle. Let me know if you would like this procedure.

We have a Kenmore Elite Trio (bottom freezer- Model#596 73502201-bought 2004) and both the fridge and freezer are blowing cool air but not cold. Food in freezer has defrosted and the fridge temp. is much...

Check to see if the evaporator behind the back metal cover on the freezer side is all frosted up, if it is, then it will probably be the defrost heater which is bad and letting it clog with frost causing low or no airflow. The heater is not expensive and can be ordered online on ebay.

American fridge/freezer - fridge stopped cooling, freezer side ok

Have you pulled out the refrigerator and cleaned or used a vacum cleaner to get out the dirt and dust off the back of the coils, or if the coils are underneath, you need to get an inexpensive appliance brush for fridge, and clean the coils under the fridge, pull off the panel on the front bottom of the fridge, get a flash light and look to see if the coils are covered in dust....may just need to vacum and use appliance brush underneath...this should be done at least one a year, you will notice your fridge running much better and cooling back to normal.......hope this helps......

Fridge not cold freezer is fine

Your defrost element is faulty, this is attached to the bottom of the freezer coils and also has a defrost limiting thermodisc which should be replaced at the same time. You are getting a freeze up and therefore no air circulation. Also check that the fanmotor is ok.

Freezer is fine. Fridgerator portion does not cool .

The most likely cause is a bad evaperator fan motor. It is mounted in the freezer section. It blows the air up to the ref section. Open the freezer door and listen to see if you hear any fan noise.
