The on-line experts don't give the same story. Some say the laptop has only one RAM slot, while others say there are two. One slot is supposedly hidden under the keyboard. Some say both RAM chips should be of equal amount. The maximum RAM is 1.25GB, but one of the experts say it is 2GB. I have a 1GB chip but don't know how to use it to upgrade my Toshiba A85-S107.

I have the same issue with my laptop. I have not been able to get the laptop to accept 2gb of memory yet, but I did find something that works. If you put your 512mb memory that works in the laptop and then add a 1gb stick in the second slot it works. Or at least it did for me. It's better than nothing. I am still trying to figure out how to get it up to the 2gb max. Will add a solution if I figure it out.

How much memory did it have before you removed the 256Mb RAM?
If it had 756Mb RAM then the memory in the laptop has 512 Mb plus 256 Mb RAM modules, the 256Mb in the slot you can see and possibly 512Mb in a slot under the keyboard or soldered on the motherboard.
Therefore by removing the 256Mb and replacing with 1Gb memory module will give you a total of 1.5Gb
