Format the memory card and then insert in the camera. After that try to take photos. If not working then camera firmware fault. Go for repairing . Repair cost not more than 30$.

SOURCE: Digital zoom not working

Digital zoom is in the menu and must be turned on to activate it. When you use the zoom it takes 2 opperations to function. First opperation is to zoom all the way in then the camera should stop. This is the limit of the optical zoom. Then you let off the zoom button, and hit it again and then the digital zoom will start. Digital zoom is just a gimic if you learn how it works its not doing anything different then you can do in photoshop. All digital zoom is doing is like cropping.

SOURCE: PICTURE SCREEN

CCD sensor fault : playback fine but no image in capture mode. Replace the sensor. Canon repairs thse faults free of charge but you need to find out what their policy is with A85. As I said this is a classic : I get + - 5 A85s every week with this particular fault.

SOURCE: In AUTO mode, pictures are all dark!

Yes you definitely can,

Turn on the camera.

The mode dial can be turned to any setting.

2. Press the button for longer than 5
seconds.
The message “Reset settings to default?” appears on the
LCD monitor.

3. Select [OK] using the left and right
buttons, then press the button.
The normal screen resumes when resetting is complete.
To cancel resetting, select [Cancel] instead of [OK].

Try cleaning the contacts on the lens and camera body where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

The screen no longer shows pictures. The screen is still working as an image flashes onto it while it's starting up. I can still take pictures.

But when you take a picture, is the image also black? If so, this sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.

if thats true then your Canon A85 got bad ccd iamger chip problem and this chip needs to be replaced.

My son dropped it and the flash no longer works. Pictures still look great outside but all inside pictures are super dark. How easily is the flash replaced and what is an estimated cost so I can plan to...

Contact kodak if you want an estimate for repairs.

If your camera can change the exposure, exposure settings. You could just change it so your camera can absorb more light in dark places.

LCD display stays dark and it will not take photos.

Say bye-bye to your CCD. They do go bad after a certain period of time. My recommendation is get a quote for replacement repair or buy another used A85. Hope this helps.

A85 LCD stays off in all modes except "stitch"

Hi Toonz
I have exactly the same problem as Shimoni and Antonio with my 4 years old A85.
But sorry, its not a problem of the CCD, cause we all get a clear actual picture on the LCD but just in stitch mode! In any other shooting or playback mode the LCD is dark. So the sensor must be working well and Canon Germany doesnt repair for free. Our failure is different and we have to pay much more than the camera is worth ;-((
