For no reason this morning my outdoor unit started working and will not turn off, though indoor unit is not on and has not been used for 15 hours. Turning the indoor unit on and off makes no difference, the outdoor unit keeps running for 20 minutes. Lots of white mist came out when we first turned the indoor unit on this morning to try and stop the outdoor unit working, and there was also a strange smell. Any idea what is wrong? The unit is only 14 months old.
Possibly a bad control board in the outdoor unit. Pull the disconnect outside to stop machine, wait 10 seconds and out back in. White mist was likely frost built up on indoor coil due to condenser running without the fan.

We had that problem with two units that we just had installed. Both are hooked up to one compressor. After several calls and the service person coming out twice, it turned out that they had two wires mixed up when they did the installation. Once they switched the wires the units ran ok.
BUT...now we are having another problem with the units/compressor not working after losing power in our house. We lose power on a regular basis here. Does anybody know if that means we will constantly need to call the service people to come to get the compressor working again? Or is there anything we can do to reset it? The service person that came today was not very helpful and didn't have a lot of answers for us.
Thanks

no sir gary,
the water would not go to the drain pan if you install it vertically.
water would just drop anywhere and would ruin a lot of things...

If you do not have a windbaffle installed on the outside unit the unit may never come out of defrost in low ambient temperatures. Depending on the outside temperature it might be telling the pcb to stay in defrost to keep the compressor from slugging and being damaged.

Normaly on this units the problem is the PC boards if i'm not mistaken they have censors this censors give problems sending the unit to a Protection mode when the units works too hard sounds like thats your problem room 2 big and the High preasure presostat it's telling the unit to stop.

You need a professional here. Once this has been repaired, I would suggest running the wiring to the outdoor unit inside some sort of piping to protect it.
