If blub not flashing then its a flash tube cut off & need replacement.

My Fuji Finepix S5800 tells me my brand new batteries are flat.

It sounds like you have bad batteries. I have had rechargeables that have suddenly done the same thing. I have learned that buying really cheap ones doesn't work out. If you buy a good branded set, I think you will find that they are much better. :)

try pressing the unzoom button and holding it for a couple of seconds until it fixes itself. and if it makes a noise, till it stops!

I would see if Fuji would let you send it in direct to them. Alternatively search on ebay for spares or repair camera that you could take the pieces off of.
