No sound from Sub Pre-out on Onkyo TX-SR606

I have a Onkyo TX-SR606 and a Klipsch 12" subwoofer. All I get is a hum from the sub. I'm using a Belkin subwoofer cable. I know the subwoofer is working because when I connect my mps player directly to the sub I hear the bas from the music. What are options?

    I too have the same problem. I know the sub and the cables are good, as I've tested them on another receiver. In the receiver's programming, all of the options are turned on for the sub, and the sub's volume is turned up on both devices.

Also, it could possibly the preout terminal itself that is not working. One way to prove that is by transferring the subwoofer cable from the preout and temporarily transfer it to the tape out section. If it ouputs sound from there, then that means the speaker and the cables are working fine and it's just the preout terminal itself that is not picking up anything. ^_^

I have a ONKYO TX2100 with an RCA disk player with 2 speakers. The player shows the disks playing but there is no sound. Formerly worked.

One option is to try different cabling. If its working with the player directly its something in between the player in the sub. (Onkyo or cables) and my bet is on the cables.

Both Onkyo and Klipsch make solid equipment, as you know. You were smart enough to buy quality hardware, that makes it easier to figure out what its not.

If the cables offer to much resistance (16 or 32 ohms) and the sub is 8 ohms that might have something to do with it. Try to match the impedance (ohms) of the device and cable.

I had the same problem with the 706 I just got. In my case the problem was with the "listening" mode. Apparently the default setting is 'stereo' for all input sources (DVD, CD, tuner, etc.). In this mode, the subwoofer doesn't seem to be active...regardless of the media that it's playing.

HOWEVER, once I selected a different listing mode (i.e. 'T-D' ) the subwoofer kicked right on...the sound is nice and full. I just got the thing yesterday, so haven't had much chance to determine other listening modes that also operate the subwoofer.

On the rear panel, the one with all the connections, you have one labeled PRE OUT SUB WOOFER with a purple connector it's located in the lower central region of the panel. That is where you connect your POWERED bass speaker (aka subwoofer) as it only has signal output and no power.

My receiver is not picking up the subwoofer, there is noise coming from the sub when I'm playing with the conection. The speakers are working and im getting prefect sound from them Please help.....
It would be helpful to know if this is a new problem on working equipment or a new problem on NEW equipment. And if you've flipped through the manual without success.

Of course you KNOW the sub must have its own amp, right?

How to hook up my subwoofer
It sounds like you're doing everything right. Did you define the sub to the Onkyo (Subwoofer = Yes, page 22)?

Let's prove the sub works. Set its volume about half-way, cutoff= 170Hz. Temporarily connect an RCA cable from its Line Input to one of the Tape Out connectors on the Onkyo and play some FM through it. If it's alive you'll hear the low end of the music.

Don't buy into the hype that there are different pedigrees of RCA (or speaker) cables that will make an audible difference. Save your money.

Have you got the sub defined to the Onkyo correctly? Try conencting the sub's input to one of the Tape Out connectors and play some FM through it. That will prove if the sub is alive. The nwe can troubleshoot the correct failing device.

I have no output from subwoofer
Hello Fixya customer,

Thank you for your question.

Please check that the sub woofer and RCA cable are working by removing the RCA wire from the Sub woofer output of the Onkyou and touching the center terminal of the RCA plug. You should here a hum when it is touched.

If you get the hum, then the next step is to "Clear" the Onkyo by holding down the "VCR and Stby" button until you see "Clear" on the display. Warning, this will clear any settings special that you have made to the receiver, but will get you back to the Factory settings.

Lastly, check various sound fields, and the Sub woofer volume setting, if you still do not get sound, please have a Onlyo service center verify the output.

Kube 2 subwoofer hum
The Kube Sub-woofer is earthed via its 3 pin plug. The Onkyo and other components I have in my system are not (they are double insulated). During normal operation, a difference in electrical potential can exist between these components in the system. I found that this potential was finding a path to earth via the audio cable and on through the subwoofer's earth. The path was via the earth portion of the audio cable and so gave the hum irrespective of volume levels set either on the Onkyo or the sub.

The fix is to ground the Onkyo to the sub. I used a length of electrical cable between a panel mounting screw on the back of the sub and a screw on the casing at the rear of the Onkyo. Try it out with a piece of cable manually touching screws with the bare ends of the cable until you find ones that give continuity( the hum will go immediately). I then crimped a small fork end electrical fitting onto each end of the cable which can be slid under the slighly loosened screw head and resecured. All I hear now is the fan on the Blu-Ray player!

Powered Or Unpowered Subwoofers For Onkyo TX-8511
Greg- Powered subs are better than non-powered subs (also known as passive subs), anyway I see the TX-8511 has no sub pre-out on the back panel, so you need to decide what sub you will use and run from the receivers left and right speakers output into a subwoofers speaker in from speakers then back out to speakers, look at the back of a subwoofer and you will see like 4 sets of speaker hookups 2 in and 2 out, what this does is takes the low end or bass and drops the signal to the subwoofer then takes the mids and highs out to your left and right speakers, unless your regular left and right stereo speakers have large woofers a sub is the way to go.

How do I connect an unpowered subwoofer to the Onkyo TX -SR606 .... I am a total numpty when it comes to this sort of thing and am rather surprised that it isn't a straightforward 'screw the cable to the...
I contacted the dealers where I bought the amp and they suggested that I connect speaker cable to both the left and right front speakers and use that to connect the subwoofer.

However, whilst this has worked (sort of) it is evident that to achieve the best results, I will need to replace my existing sub with a powered one in the near future.

Only a temporary fix I'm afraid, but it got the job done.

Hi there. If you are running a 5.1 speaker system, make sure your surround speakers are on the surround terminal NOT ON THE SURROUND BACK. the surround back is only for the 7.1 speaker system.

Onkyo Subwoofer Pre Out Problem
May not necessarily be the out put, discontect the sub from the receiver and see if it still makes a hum, Making sure that you turn auto on, off on the sub woffer.
If it still makes a hum, then you have a earthing problem, you can get a earth filter put on your internal wiring in your home, or you can remove the earth pin on your sub woffer
