My iphone 3g (unlocked /jailbroken) showed no service. Turned phone off and when I turned it back on it never came back to life. Just sat on the apple logo. I tried the sleep and home button reboot and nothing. I downloaded redsnOw and firmware 4.2.1 followed steps, got the pineapple..finally booted up showing low battery then went back to it apple logo state. I don't want to lose any of my contacts or pictures as I had not backed it up for a while. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to a fresh restore of the iPhone. Hold down the home and power buttons together until the screen goes black. Then while the screen is still black, plug it into your computer WHILE holding down the home button.
At this point iTunes should detect your iPhone and tell you that you need to do a restore.
Hope this helps!

U PLS do as i say ..............Open iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac or PC
Step Two
Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.
Step Three
After exactly 10 seconds release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the home button until you iTunes pops up a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
The iPhone screen will remain black like this:
NOTE***: It may take a few attempts to get your iPhone into DFU mode. Generally, I hold down both buttons then release the Home button just before I think the Apple logo would appear. If you are still holding both buttons down and you see the Apple logo you are holding them down for too long!

samevthing happened to me your gonna have to plugg your iphone into the comupter and hold the power and home button down at the same time until it shuts off. Keep holding the buttons down until it powers back on. there should be a picture of a guy wearing holding his hands up in the air on your iphone and itunes should open up on your computer. Now you will have to restore your phone.
