Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver

you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd restart your computer then plug them back this should activate the found new hardware wizard

if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer

Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

hope this helps

if this fails to fix the problem

It could be a problem with the lens you could use a liquid type lens cleaner place 2-3 drops on top of a cd/dvd then run it

SOURCE: Cannor Read DVDs

I have a similar issue to you, except that my dvd drive will only recognize a disc if I have booted up into windows with it in the tray...once in windows it will still think it has the first disc in no matter what disc i insert. If i boot up with no disc then it will never read it unless I follow the steps below.

A solution I found by pure frustration and trying all sorts of things is to eject the DVD tray and leave it opened, then right click on the dvd drive in 'my computer' and select the 'hardware' tab...then select the drive and click 'properties'.
A new window should open. Select 'volumes' and click 'populate'. Now close the window and insert the disc you wish to read, close the tray and repeat this process. Windows should now recognize the disc you inserted

Alot of trouble I know, but it works for me. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Nothing happens when a put a disc in the drive

Yesterday got code 39 error with CD/DVD drive and it just stopped reading discs all together for TSSTcorp DVD/CDW TS-H652D. We are very frustrated and looking for FREE driver install/download/update to fix this problem and don't understand why we cannot find this for FREE when our computer came with this driver to begin with and it stopped working and now everywhere we look for solution, it requires payment to fix what we had originally. Can u help us? We already tried install and uninstall then using new hardware wizard which did not solve problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank u very kindly. Ange

Does the computer read other dvds? If it doesn't, then the optical drive probably has a problem with the lens tracking. This could be repaired but isn't worth it. A new SATA DVD writer can be purchased for less than $30. (Or you can get an external DVD drive (with a USB connection).)

I hope this helps.

My computer (3.0 GHz Pentium 4 with Asus P4P800-E Deluxe mobo) will boot to the POST screen, and it successfully identifies all of my hardware (memory, hard disk, DVD-ROM drive, etc.), but then won't...

Checked your RAM chips? Remove them and boot up and see if it will beep. If you have another DVD drive, swap it and try again. The board battery rarely goes, and only change it when it is not keeping the date/time etc, it won't help in outputting video.

Asus DRW-241st stopped recognizing any DVD's though it still reads CD's. Other then that it seems to be running just fine.

Good day sir, Try to clean it with a CD lens cleaner if problem persist.I recommend replacing your optical disk drive or use it as a slave for reading CD's so that your new ODD will last long. in my opinion most DVDRAM, player etc. can read most formats except Bluray disc. using the device from reading CD,VCD and DVD lessen's the device life span.
sometimes if we rarely use the ODD its already not working.

You probably will need to replace the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) in your laptop. Go to Google and search for "Dell Inspirion 6000 CD/DVD drive" to find a replacement.
To be sure it's the CD/DVD drive that's defective and not your operating system software, you could also try to boot from a boot-able DVD disk.

My computer doesn't recognize my optical drive within the BIOS or windows (HL-DT-STDVDRAM GT31N ATA Device ) in windows7

Hello,

If BIOS won't detect the Optical Drive, try reseating the SATA cable connection from the ODD to the mainboard. it might be have troubles detecting it due to a loose connection.
