LG Electric Range Oven touchpad buttons not working

Unable to set clock or turn on oven when pushing Start Button. Possible PCB membrane not connecting to the relay

VERY SAME PROBLEM--THE DAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS EVE. NOT HAPPY WITH MY CHOICE OF AN ELECTRIC RANGE AT THIS MOMENT.

  • ironmc Jan 17, 2009

I had even worse symptoms. Any of the buttons might not work on any given day, and then work the next day. Very frustrating for a 2 year old range. I tried the best solution here myself and was amazed that it worked. First unplug the range. Then just take off the top back panel. (I had to take out the top 5 screws on each side of the lower panel to get the top panel out as it has a flange on the bottom). There are two ribbons with blue clips on the top left of the board. The clips have holders on each side that have to be pried out to remove the clip. I know this because I broke one off taking the first one off. It doesn't seem to affect the operation though. The clips slide independent of the ribbon, so slide them up the ribbon. Now take the ribbon out of the slot. I just wiped it off with a paper towel. Slide it back in, making sure it is square to the slot and push the clip back in. Repeat for the other ribbon. The whole thing took less than 20 minutes and now everything works.
    Good Luck

I had this same problem with the clock, timer on/off, cook time, and start buttons not working.  I removed the top sheet metal panel on the rear of the unit and unplugged both the blue ribbons.  I then inserted them and removed them quickly a few times in an effort to clean the metal contacts on the ribbon as well as the ciruit board.... sure enough this worked... kinda crappy that one would have to do this on a fairly new (less than 2 years) appliance.  atleast it works now :-/

  • Anonymous Feb 24, 2009

My Start button quit working too. Took it apart pressed the start button hard from the back and it worked....Once. Then quit again, found this site and tried the suggestion above. The push clear and hold start button until door locks, then do it again until door unlocks. This fixed the problem, for now. This problem occurred after using the self clean feature, so I had a feeling it might have something to do with the auto lock feature. The way the touch pad buttons are made makes them prone to failure, so now I will be doing some research on what we can do about it. Oven is working again... don't know for how long though. If it quits again I will be back here.

Oven and clock touchpads not working. Has happened a couple times. Annoying in a range that is only 2 years old. Also cannot get the white top clean. There is a shadow on the burners that will not come off. Right now I am not happy with this stove.

  • sljohns May 06, 2009

I have the same problem - touchpad number 4 first got difficult to use when stove about 18 months old, then around 24 months old stopped working altogether. Everything else works fine but if you need a 450 degree oven we are out of luck. Very annoying for a 2 year old stove. Repair company recommended by LG came by and charged me $93 to recommend that I spend another $330 in parts and labor to fix. Will next try this site's solutions first. LG was quite blase about the whole thing and happy to say it's not under warranty. Incredible. I will never ever buy LG again.

  • Anonymous Dec 24, 2011

I was down to one element working...others either didn't turn on or I couldn't adjust heat. Only regular bake worked....no clean, no convection....my son and I pulled out the stove, unplugged it, took off back top panel and pushed ribbon connectors in. One seemed to be partially out. I didn't pull them out and wipe down as they didn't come out easily and I was afraid to break them. Bottom line is that everything works now. Amazing. I would recommend that before you even go through the effort of taking the back off you first unplug and replug in the stove. That might be sufficient to reset everything. Good luck.

  • Anonymous Jun 09, 2013

  • Michael M tv Aug 30, 2013

What a blessing it was to use the advice posted here and to discover it actually worked! I would only like to add that i cleaned the connection and my touchpap did not work initially. So I detached the oven's back cover again and reinserted the ribbons after one more wiping of the ribbons. I was a bit tentative about pushing the ribbons into place and as a result I believe they lacked a firm contact position. After my second effort I can report that all the touchpad functions work perfectly. It has been quite some time since this has been the case. Without perjury I can blame my engaging the self clean feature. Thanks to everyone who gave such effective advice.

Okay. Here"s what worked for me. Unplug the range to kill the power. Remove the small metal cover where the power cord enters thr range. It is held by two sheet metal screws and is easy to remove. The power cord has roughly 6 screws that attach it. Take a phillips head driver and be sure all are tight. Blow out any dust. The most important thing is to find the "green screw". It is located behind where the power cord attaches. Tighten this securely. Mine was only tightened about half way. I am sure it has been like this since the install in July 2011. I plugged the unit back in and all button functions now work properly. It was probably the ground wire, but check all screws that attach the cord. I sure hope this helps you out.

  • Jim B
    Jim B Dec 16, 2013

Check the ground wire connection where the power cord enters the range. You will have to remove a small metal panel. Look for the green headed screw where all the cord wires connect. Check to be sure all the screws that hold the cord to the panel are tight. Mine was really loose I am sure since install in 2011. When I tightened all buttons worked as normal. Be sure to unplug the range before doing this. Hope it helps.

I have had the same model LG range for not quite 2 years and my start button was doing the same. I called the 1.800 number on the appliance to no avail .... the woman was as much help as a squashed grape. "You must have the door lock on" she kept telling me ... and I kept insisting "no, the bloody START key on my oven control is NOT working!" Today, after sporadic use of my oven [stove works fine] I found this lovely nugget of appliance repair wisdom and ... it is hereby sorted out. I am so happy that I will be able to bake again [I am an avid baker and cook!]. Thank you SO so much for sharing this tidbit of information!!!

how do you remove the blue ribbons? it looks like it could slide out but then it looks like im going to pull the end of the ribbon right out of the holder...

  • Jenn Graham Jan 15, 2015

I started having a problem with the start button and the timer button shortly after running the self cleaning oven. Now, when I use the oven, the start button stops working, or works sporadically. The timer, well, I can't use that if the oven's hot unless I want to take a run to the breaker box to shut off the beeper when time is up. I will try this fix, but I suspect I have a bit more involved problem since it seems to be linked to heat. I'm thinking the self cleaning mode may have fried my ribbon connections :(

The lock and unlock works well for the 4 - 5 button problem. However the "start" button failure is another problem altogether. I had this problem and found that the ribbon connector attaching the membrane switches to the circuit card (PWB) is where the problem lies. The ribbon cables (two of them) are connected by a pressure contact connector mounted on the PWB. This connection method is less than robust. the fix is to pull the ribbon from the connector, clean it carefully with a paper towel and some alcohol, and reconnect it. To remove the cable the connector has a small flange that pops up about .05 inch whn you pull on the connector. Once it pops up gently pull the ribbon cable out of the connector. To replace it just push the ribbon back into the slot on the top of the connector and snap the flange back down. I strongly suspect this connector will get dirty again every couple years as the oven vent fumes are not properly prevented from partially passing over the PWB right where these connectors are mounted.

Thanks 'jcgrimes'. Your solution worked great!! It was effortless--took about 10 minutes altogether. I was a little nervous about pulling on the blue ribbon but with a little tug it came out fine. Just note that the blue tab never comes off of the oven. It slides out about 1/2 cm like you said, but then the ribbon is the only thing that really disconnects all of the way.

You probably saved me hundreds of $$. And now we can cook the Thanksgiving turkey!

  • Anonymous Jan 27, 2011

Thank-you jcgrimes! After removing the top back panel and cleaning the ribbon edge, the buttons for the range elements are working again. My only mistake was attempting to pull the base of the blue tabs out after sliding them out 1/2 cm. Gently pulling the ribbon is all that is required.

Greatly appreciate everybody else's comments on what worked for them too. Thanks for posting.

I've had my LG range for about 4 years and haven't had any problems ( also have an LG fridge and dishwasher and have had problems with them within 2 years of installing them--not a big LG fan at this point!) until the other day. I used the self clean and then oven worked for 2 days then "start" button wouldn't work (so nothing on the oven worked). Tried the reset thing--nothing. So I pulled the oven out, took off the back cover, pulled out the blue cables, cleaned them, plugged them back in and like a miracle(!) it works! Thank you so much!!! You saved me a min of a hundred dollars! Wasn't hard at all!

  • Anonymous Jan 30, 2013

Thank you!! same issue as llckuiper. Used the self clean, then the start button only worked half the time. Cleaned the cables and it works! So thankful for your sharing.

I don't ever comment or make reviews, however today I feel inclined due to how much this helped!!! WOW!!! Our LG stove's START button stopped working 3 days ago. I finally had time to call LG customer service today. They said since mine is from 2011 the 1 year warranty does not apply anymore. It would be $89 to have them come out, $100 to diagnose it and $150 to $250 for the part. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! I then decided to call Sears to find out what the cost to have them come out would be. Again, by the time the charge for service call, labor and parts the low end of my repair would be $275 to $300. My point, thank you thank you for posting this 5 years ago. It took me less then 10 minutes and was so simple. :-))

This happened to me on Christmas Day morning & it happened once before. I finally remembered how I fixed it. There is a lockout feature on the oven - push the "Clear" button & then push the "Start" & keep it held in until you see the lock button light up (takes awhile) & then push the "Clear" button again. After I did this the "Clock" worked again - reset the clock to the correct time & push "Start" Then click on "Bake" set your temperature & push "Start". Hope this works for you. It got me out of cooking Christmas Dinner!!!!

I had similar problem. Broil button and Oven Light button would not work. "Toughs" suggestion worked! I pressed Clear then held Start until the lock light came on. (Door Lock) Then pressed and held Start again until the lock light went off. All the buttons now work!

I don't know what locking the oven door then unlocking it again has to do with making the Broil and Oven Light buttons work again but it did....??? Thanks!!!

  • Toughs Sep 05, 2011

Yes, i usually have to do this each time I use the self-clean. Annoying, but it works! We have also had to replace the hidden bake element once

  • Toughs Nov 13, 2011

I have finally found the best solution - it is on it's way to the E-Waste Depot. This range is a POS. We have replaced the sub-relay asssembly unit 2 times now. It has gone again & it was just replaced 6 months ago. We have also replaced the hidden bake element once. It used to only have issues after you used the Self Clean - had to remove the back panel after the clean cycle & remove the blue ribbon cables. I think I might take a sledge hammer to it first & then drop it off. We have 5 other LG appliances - the fridge & dryer have both been replaced under warranty, unfortunately the stove starting having issues after the warranty. It is being replaced with a KitchenAid.

Eddie. Tried your suggestion to fix the timer not working. Seems to have solved the issue. Problems started to occur within 12-18 months from purchase. Also have an issue with error code f11. Oven cuts out at 100 degrees farenheight. I then shut off the oven and restart. This works but have no confidence in the unit. May need a service tech look at it. Anyone have thoughts on this error code? Paid nearly 2k brand new. LG electric range is such a P.O.S. Many thanks for your idea on the quick fix!

Our LG range suffered from the "4" and "5" buttons not working, the large-to-small element selector not working plus several up and down functions not enabled. Technician unplugged the range, removed the back, unplugged and repluggged all the ribbon connectors. All works now.

My LG oven/stove top would come on only when they wanted to. I have had numerous problems getting the buttons to work. Cleaning the ribbon made all of the difference. It's a shame to spend the kind of money for this type of range and get this poor quality of product and absolutely no help or concern from the manufacturer. I will under no circumstance purchase any LG product of any kind in the future. I will cook with wood if that's what it takes. If you have the same problem, I would suggest using the above solutions from "ironmc" and "jcgrimes". My stove top and oven are now working. Thank you!

I don't have any solution except the possibility of a class action lawsuit against LG. I too, have been having problems with the touch panel since the stove was about 18 mos old. This is an expensive stove and we, as consumers, should not have to put up with this. it is time for companies to stand behind their products with a reasonable warranty (5yr for this stove) based on what you pay for it.
Signed - A very unhappy LG consumer!!!!

I agree, We also got hosed by LG. Three warrantied service calls, the board replaced and it worked for almost a year. Once again the top caps will not respond on the right side. I strongly suggest staying away from any LG appliance. The wife was so excited to get a new stove only to have many disappointments.

I also have this problem and I hate my LG stove. The only solution I have, and it always works, is to give the control panel a big old-fashioned slap. I'd like to give one to the LG engineers who made this piece of **** too.

  • Anonymous Jun 19, 2012

My sentiments exactly! LOL. Do NOT buy LG under any circumstances. I have heard nothing but complaints from everyone I know who has any LG appliances. The products, warranty and service all ****.

Cleaning of ribbon solution...worked for me. YES!!!
Our first failure happened under warranty, so the panel was free, but not the labour...arghh.
A second failure of some buttons happened just a year after, and I luckily happened on this thread. It's a very simple fix and took less than half an hour.
That probably means that on failure 1 there was no need to replace the whole panel; merely disconnecting and reconnecting the ribbons is all it takes. What a waste that was.

Jcgrimes Solution #4 - fixed our stove and saved us $110 - the cost of a repair person just to look at the stove. I had the same issue the START button would not click and turn on. Taking off the panel is easy, but getting it back on is a little bit of a chore. It took us about 45 minutes to fix, but well worth the savings. LG no longer makes this model - the warranty for this $800.00 stove is only 1 year. I will never buy LG again because they don't stand behind their product.

If your model # matches the recall list, your S/N might not even the symptom matches and then it's not free repair. What a shame. Don't waste time and fix it according to the info provided by some nice contributors in this thread. It took me 30 min to get a "you're not qualified" answer from LG and 20 min to fix it by myself.

Just as jason_lee_kl described, I cleaned my ribbons. I used a q-tip and rubbing alcohol to clean, and a little dielectric grease to keep the connection clean for long term. Any autoparts store or electrical supply place will sell you a small amount of this grease for cheap, and it's made for electrical connections.

I waited 2 months to post this, and I have had NO problems since using Jason's solution. Like all of you, I had sporadic problems with ALL of my buttons. Thinking it was a computer or brain problem, and having no reset listed in the manual, I would flip the breaker. Then different functions would either work or not. The zero may not work for the oven, or one of the burners would not let me go up, but I could go down, etc.

ALL PROBLEMS GONE!!!

Thanks Jason.

Thanks so much for the advice. Had a Sears repair already booked but decided to try the above solution. Start button & timer/clock setting buttons all not working after a self-clean cycle. As suggested I removed the top back panel along with a few screws from the lower panel so the top would slide out. Pulled the blue ribbon out of the blue connector (after sliding connector partially in & out a few times, ribbon slide out & I wiped it & placed it back into the connector. Oven working like a charm & saved at least a $99 service call & likely the unnecessary cost of a new circuit board. I had already replaced the circuit board for the stove top 20 months after purchase & stove is now 5 years old. What a lemon!!!

I have finally found a solution - the POS is on it's way to the E-Waste Depot. We have replaced the sub relay assembly on it 2 times now & the bake element once. The sub relay assembly has gone again. It was just replaced 6 months ago. This range used to only have issues after using the self clean feature, you had to remove the back panel & remove the blue ribbon connectors clean them & connect them again. This was an expensive range & there is no reason that one should have to do this. We have 5 other LG appliances, the dryer & fridge broke down under warranty & they were replaced. Unfortunately, the range started having issues after the warranty period. I think I might take a sledge hammer to it before delivering it to E-Waste Depot. We are replacing it with a KitchenAid range.

I have an LG stove, double oven. Very expensive. It's 2 years old. At 6 months, we had to start turning the breaker off to get the touch pad to work. This stopped working for us after the self clean cycle. We took the back panel off, but no blue ribbons? Any ideas?

I don't have anything new to add but I wanted to add another confirmation to the fix that's stated here with the blue ribbon cables. My left rear burner would turn on and the left front would too, but only if the rear one was also on. The other 2 burners, the warming zone, and the oven would not turn on. I could set an oven temp but the start button wouldn't work. On rare occasions it would but it wasn't predictable. I removed the two blue ribbons cleaned them and reseated them and everything now works perfectly. I didn't see any dirt or grime on my ribbon connectors and I'm not sure if cleaning them or ensuring they were seated properly was the actual fix. Either way give this a try. 20 minutes with one person and a Phillips screw driver is all it takes. PS. Much thanks to the previous posts for providing the solution. Having a working stove for no repair costs means SO much to me and my limited budget. Thanks!!!

I was very skeptical as mine felt like the buttons weren't making contact. However the 'cleaning and reseating of the blue ribbons' worked for me too! Thank you so much! Model: LRE304538T

Solution 1 worked perfectly. Only problem I had was that I used an alcohol pad to clean the ribbons and the first pad I used didn't have much alcohol. After I used a better pad it worked great. Thanksgiving is saved!!!!

We can get the stove on but we cannot turn it off, So now we go downstairs and flip the breaker. We can only get 2 of the burners working. I called LG and they told me it is not under warranty because it is just over 2 years old but they did agree to send a tech out to diagnosis the problem and see if it is flaw in the design. Now looking at this page I now know it is. Not happy with LG at all.

I paid for service call 3 Times for my LG range for a total of $375. The last straw was when the oven door fell off the hinges after having it on self clean. I immediately got rid of my LG range....a waste of $900 as range only in usable condition for 2 good years!!!!

I have been doing the ribbon cable cleaning every year now since we bought this POS.

Has anyone tried anything to permanently(or more permanent) fix this. Like shielding the connection with silicon or something.

Have a LG LRE6323ST and I the oven would not work and the back burner and a couple of numbers. I tried to clean the ribbon cables and it did not work, So since this was my neighbors stove who gave it to me. I peeled off the front panel. No screwdrivers necessay. Slowly and there there was three layers. the top layer were carbon like buttons that would connect two lines on the next layer together when you pushed the button. On the second layer you could see all the lines and is some places it was exposed conductor you could put an ohm meter on. I found a break in one of the lines, Caused all of the problems. I think it was above where the heat is exhausted from the oven. So that could have caused the break. I could not solder these lines to fix the break because the line was so fine and would not take solder, plastic melted. So I just got a piece of cooper wire with many fine strands and wedged it in place to bridge the gab. You could probably buy some liquid they have to mend lines like on your windshield defroster. I replaced the top layer and it works fine. remember where the spot is with the mend, The oven stopped working again after a week or so , so I just pushed on the spot where the repair was and it works again. So I pushed the top layer down again firmly all over to make sure it was making good seal. It has been two months now and everything works fine.

Had the same issues with LG LRE30453ST doing the same thing. The oven start button wouldn't work, took panel off back and then found a blue ribbon was partially connected on the chipboard inside. Reconnected it and it works fine now.

First time buttons stopped to work on my LG oven about 6-7 months ago, problem went away by itself, then on Thanksgiving morning start button was dead and we could not turn on oven. I came to this page and used alcohol to clean ribbons. Worked! Them stopped again, and again, and again. Last time i did not even put the top panel back on. Easier to get there to unplug the ribbon, wipe it with alcohol and play it back in. LG is garbage.

I have a smeg A42-5 oven and the digital clock as gone blank and i'm unable to use the oven but the grill still works. can anyone help?

Hi There
I have found this for to read and hope this will help you. Let me know how it goes.
The clock stopped The non-electronic clocks on electric range/ovens often don't last long. That's a problem, because the clock is essential to the self-cleaning and timed-bake features. Clocks are rarely repairable--you usually just have to replace them. Electronic clocks have been more reliable. But, they're often integrated with several other features of the range/oven. So when the clock develops a defect, it often renders the entire oven and broiler inoperative. The electronic clock is usually integrated with a circuit board, and the touchpad that holds the buttons you press is often a separate component. If your electronic clock is defective, you may need to replace the touchpad, circuit board, or both. Although these may be expensive, they aren't usually very complicated to replace.
Thank you for writing to fix ya.
Best Regards Richard

- Disconnect power to the range.
- Gain access to the back of the ERC (electronic range control, or "clock").
- Unplug the touch pad ribbon connector from the ERC. This will be a flat wire about 1 ½" to 2" wide.
- Make sure everything is clear and will not short out when power is turned back on. Replace any covers removed to gain access to the ERC.
- Turn the power back on to the range.
- Watch for the F-1 and listen for the beep.
- If you get the F-1 and beep, replace the ERC.
- If after approximately 60 Minutes you do not get the F-1 fault, replace the touch pad.

NOTE: Some models incorporate the touch pad and the clock control as one part so F1 = bad clock control.

Lg lre30451sw oven the start button doesn't work

This happened to me on Christmas Day morning & it happened once before. I finally remembered how I fixed it. Push the "Clear" button & then push the "Start" & keep it held in until you see the lock button light up (takes awhile) & then push the "Clear" button again. After I did this the "Clock" worked again - reset the clock to the correct time & push "Start" Then click on "Bake" set your temperature & push "Start". Hope this works for you. It got me out of cooking Christmas Dinner, but I fixed it today!!
