Toshiba Tecra M5 Boot Problems

I have a Toshiba Tecra M5 that won't boot up. I have bought it as working but without a hard drive and ram. I have fitted a new hard drive and 1GB Ram now but when i turn it on it won't boot. I get the toshiba splash screen and i am able to select a boot device (after pressing F2) but when i select the boot device i just get a flashing cursor on a blank screen and nothing more. One thing i did note is that once i t has been on this screen for 5-10 seconds the fan comes on flat out and stays on. Also i am unable to get into the bios. I have tried pressing the esc key during the flash screen but it just goes to the blank screen with the flashing cursor. If i try to put a windows disk into the drawer (whether a dvd or cd) you can hear the drive begin to spin up like its going to read the disk then it stops and nothing. I can't think what to do so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the swift reply. I have tried what you suggested but nothing. Now i have tried re-seating the processor, ram and hard drive but this also makes no difference

You can boot from XP cd.
When prompted..press [R] this will launch recovery console.
Choose your windows installation (typically by pressing [1] press return..
When prompted for password type chkdsk /r
Press return..Windows will fix errors..type Exit and press return..
Let me know if that helps.

Try reseating the RAM module/s. If it still does not boot up then then RAM could be faulty, remove the RAM module/s and take them to your friendly computer repair shop and get them to test the RAM for you.

The laptop won't boot

probably the hard drive in your laptop is gone.
try booting ubuntu in live mode, so without installing it.
when the boot is completed, launch the tool gparted and see if it detects the hard drive: if it doesn't, you need to change the hard disk..

Your hard drive may have gone south. Remove it and check with diagnostic software. Bad sectors in critical areas of operating system data will do this.

My Toshiba Tecra M5 won't boot. The power light flashes on and off, the fan starts but nothing is on the screen. How can I get it to boot?

Well, it sounds like you have a hardware problem. Start by removing the Ram and hard Drive from the machine and insert a boot disk. If your not getting the Tecra Splash screen when you press the power button, the screen that appears before the windows boot screen, you may have a bad Monitor or Burned background lamp or faulty BIOS install or upgrade. Any of which will give you this problem.

Dead hard drive, replacement not working

The solution is that you simply cannot go out and buy a replacement HD. You have to buy TOSHIBA's replacement HD.

They make a 40, 80, 160 and 320 GB HD for Tecra MV2's etc.- Other HDs simply will not detect.

windows 95 PC wow
page 136.
in all cases, all 3 batteries will be no good after 23 years.
sorry, batteries are weak technology unlike chips inside PC that can go 100 years, some even 200. (facts)
the top age failures are
1: battery. all 3 in this case.
2: CCFL lamps dead. or acting UP.
3: HDD dead or growing bad sectors every hour. doom city!
