Try following...
1. Turn off and unplug the printer. Duh.
2. Prop open the top so you can work. I used a screwdriver under the hinge.
3. Wet a q-tip in plain water and *important* shake off the excess. Don't drip water into the printer guts. Again, duh.
4.
Carefully wipe off both sides of the encoder strip until it looks
translucent gray. I did this by gently twisting the strip so I could
press downwards with the q-tip. Do all of it that is exposed then slide
the carriage to the other side and clean the strip section that was
hidden by it. Be careful, if it breaks you're screwed.
5. Dry
the strip. I used my fingertips. If you use a rag be sure it's soft and
lint free. IMPORTANT: Dry it only from left to right towards the
spring. Going the other way might cause the strip to fall off. And
again, you're screwed.

LEAVE PRINTER ON THEN,

Try to move the carriage with your hand and aLso apply some greese material on the steel rod on which the carriage moves.and then take the carriage from left to right with your hand manually 10 -15 times.and then again try it should now work out .
Hi,
I have seen this problem a lot. 1st turn off the machine. All inkjets have a thin strip of metal that enables the machine to tell where the carriage is. If you look at the section where you add the ink, you'll see it run along behind the carriage. The common cause of this problem is that strip being dirty or damaged. You may be able to clean the strip using a clean cloth and a little bit of alcohol. After you do this, turn the machine back on and test it.
If the fix above doesn't work then the most time and cost effecient solution may be to buy a new one. Unfortunately, these machine are not made to be serviced. As a printer technician I find that they are very hard to get parts for and, even if I can get them, they are so expensive that a repair costs more than a replacement printer.
Please don't kill the messenger :(
I don't agree with doing business this way but many manufacturers find it profitable.
I hope you find this information helpful.
This is very likely a carriage a carriage problem and if you've sufficiently cleaned the encoder strip then you may have to replace this machine.

HI
There is a solution on the HP website, the carriage is the part that moves left to write to put the ink on the paper.
HP say move it to the opposite side from where it is gently. That didn't work for me, i got a bit more violent and moved it quickly from side to side getting a nice smack on each side and it came right, strangely enough.
BUT i dint believed it it is a software issue so go to  http://www.softwareforless.com/findspecs...
if you think you want to clean it again steps are here
You can clean the print heads manually before buying another one, follow these instructions:Â http://www.maxpatchink.com/

It's possible if you're done so much you could have a sensor that has just gone bad. You can also try to right click on 'my computer' select manage then services and application>services> then go down until print spooler and right click and select stop> then right click and select start. Turn the printer off wait a second and turn back on see if this resolves the issue.
Try checking the sensor is it connected properly.also replace the smallmini boaRD where the sensor is connected.
Do you have a Carriage jam on the printer? Try pressing STOP or CANCEL if that doesn't work Reset the printer, if that doesn't reset the problem you need to service the printer.
If you have done everything as you say you have, why did you come here? buy a new printer.
A semi-full reset will do the following:
The user settings to the factory
defaults, Language and country settings on some models, Fax logs, Fax headers,
Fax speed dial information.
Reset the All-in-One to the factory default
settings by using these instructions:
1. Unplug the power cable from
printer when the printer is powered on and wait for 20 seconds.
2. Then,
press and hold # and 6 while plugging in the power cord.
Continue holding
until it displays Semi Full Reset message in the front panel of the
All-in-One.

Its possible that you had a problem on the prnter head,
try doing a print head alignment on the printer utility.
1.
1 Switch off the printer and disconnect the power
supply. Allow any residual charge to fade away before putting your hands or
metal tools inside the chassis.
2.
Step 2 Pin down the exact location of the jam. The
three hot spots for a jam are the paper tray, anywhere between the feed tray
and the print carriage, or between the print carriage and the output tray.
3.
Step 3 Take off the front paper tray if the sheet got
stuck while it was still in the front area of the printer. If the sheet jammed
here, you should be able to see most of the paper.
4.
Step 4 Pull on the sheet with both hands and steady
pressure. Do not tug as you might rip the paper, leaving a chunk of it deeper
in the machine.
5.
Step 5 Open the back panel to reach paper jammed
between the feed tray area and the print carriage of the all-in-one printer.
Carefully remove the jammed paper from the machine.
6.
Step 6 Use the carriage access door to reach a jam
further inside the all-in-one printer. You may need to move the print carriage
out of your way to clear the jam.
Step 7 Return any access panels to their closed and
locked positions. Plug your printer back in and flip the power switch
