No power to digital thermostat. Circuit breaker OK, not tripped.
Hello, if the unit is equipped with a condensate safety switch it will kill power to the thermostat if the drain line is backed up. You would need to use a wet/ dry vac to clean out the line. The line is typically a 3/4 inch white pvc pipe. If the unit does not have a safety switch then either a blown fuse, burned out transformer are the problem.

Check your wiring between the contactor and compressor for a short to ground, or check the compressor windings for short to ground.
With the Tstat off, the contactor should be open so the only way for the compressor to be trying to do anything is if the 110 volts from the unbroken side are traveling through the compressor to ground. Since 110v is not enough to run it, the overload is kicking it out, cooling off, and repeating the cycle. When you kick on the Tstat, the contactor is supplying voltage directly to ground without going through the resistence of the compressor windings and kicking the breaker.
Post back and let me know what you find.

Must be a bad capacitor or a bad contactor.

It's a Ruud system, 6 years old. AC was working fine. Just shut off. Thermostat appears to be without power. Checked circuit box, even turned switch off and then on again. Please tell me this is an easy and INEXPENSIVE fix. I can't afford much.
That was exactly the problem. I did call a technician out who was very, very helpful. He showed me how to clean out the pvc pipe and gave me a few other maintenance tips; things I didn't know. I admit, I have skimped on the annual AC maintenance from the installing company for 2 years now and realize the importance of doing them. Will now go with the company who visited this time.
