The switch broke on my HP Pavilion m9040n and it won't turn on or off because the plastic plunger on the switch broke off rendering the switch useless. I want to either bypass the switch or replace the switch but I can't find anyone who knows what to do in this situation. Please help. The rest of my computer is running fine, but only if I can turn it on. I can't understand why HP used a cheap plastic part on a most critical element of a computer. Please email me an answer at [email protected]. Thank you for your help whomever replies.

Your download speed can be tested through your internet service provider. How you connect to the internet has allot to do with download speed. This is one of many links to test. If the problem is with your computer try using windows help and support and system tools. Larry

Boatin4me is correct on the process of elimination. I had the same issue and it was related to a bad modem.

That's rather like saying your car won't start and asking where to buy a part. It would probably be a good idea to know what part you need first, and then you can shop around until you find the best place. Having said that, I usually check eBay first for laptop parts, and TigerDirect or Newegg for desktop parts.
But I'm confused. I can't find any listing on HP's site or in any of my literature from time as an HP warranty-authorized servicer for an HL919. I do find an XT919 listed, though. If this is yours, you may have trouble finding any parts other than plug-in pieces (RAM, processor, etc.) which are generic. The only "part" listed is a replacement computer, meaning this was a model made for HP by someone else and branded for them. Even HP doesn't support those; under warranty they simply replace the computer and send the dud back to whoever made it.
If the computer won't turn on, try another power supply. A generic power supply may fit in the case, but I don't have any way to check for sure. Some HP machines used proprietary supplies with odd dimensions and power connectors. If the power supply isn't the trouble, the motherboard is the next likely problem, and you probably won't find one at a reasonable price if at all. If the processor and memory are current, I'd suggest just getting a new motherboard and installing it in the case and reusing the other parts. Assuming, again, that the power supply has a standard plug for the board, and that the current motherboard uses standard mounting hole locations.
Good luck, and thanks for using Fixya.

I already called HP and talked with a technician who told me they don't have the switch to sell to people because it isn't a stock item, it's a manufacturing item and they don't have the part nor a part number for it. I just wasted $1000.00 plus on a computer that worked fine until the switch broke and now it's worthless and I have to buy a new computer. My message to all is don't buy an HP computer because they are in fact junk and are built with cheap parts such as a plastic switch that has a plastic plunger to press on a contact to turn the computer on and off. I will never buy an HP computer again because of this incident. Take that HP and correct it and you will get me back.
