I can't figure out how to get to the fan. Maybe someone has done this and has Instructions. It has a big bottom cover, should I get to the fan from there or from the top? I fear it's covered in dust and I want to clean it. Doing anything with this computer raises core temp to 80-90 degree celsius
I'd stick a hoover over the vents and try to **** out the dust rather than blow with an air-duster and force dust/gunk further into the machine. Use air duster on it only if you've dismantled.

Do NOT open it..........I'm saying this because it AUTOMATICALLY voids your warranty!!!!!!!
Take it to a certified repair shop/store/dealer.......... ask them to open it and clean the dust out.
Or you can just try using a can of compressed air (found in electronics dpts/stores/computer shops,etc.....) and b low air through all vents and openings.

I have this laptop to, I disarmed totally, do screws from bottom then take out keybord it has some pins facing the screen side with a little flat screwdriver you move them, then one screw holds the DVD unit, then do all screws around the keyboard, to open the case on the battery you have like other clips, from the is pretty straigth foward, CMOS battery is near the ram area and it orther to get to it you need to undo the screws on the motherboard. Also had some problems with the windows not restaring and the problem was one the rams broke or get damaged and always go to recovery and then blue screen.
!The most important the fan problem is that need a BIOS updated, you go to sony, vio model and look for the driver is the version R0140X6 here is the link http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGN-FJ170 I hope this little guide work and good luck.
