Ok... so another possibility- which was the situation in my case is:
The door lock mechanism cannot rotate back to its "open" setting. You can open it and manually rotate it back. The lock will work once, then same problem.
In this case it is due to the fact that the white plastic piece inside the lock is finally old enough to have worn out (10+) years. Order and replace the lock, and good as new.
VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure you are holding the SPIN Selector and ALLERGY rinse buttons when you reset it. I was holding Allergy and Start and never saw the P01, P02 etc... codes to get the machine to enter "self-test" mode. This essentially resets the motherboard and allows you to shut it off and then begin using it normally (I call this the Bill Gates mode.)
Cost: $66 for the door lock (in my case black/red) and 2 day shipping. Doing Laundry in your own home: Priceless.
Leave unplugged for 24 hours.

SOURCE: door won't lock
If the interlock isn't working it may not allow the machine to start. If you can open the door when it should be locked it's probably a faulty interlock.......Nomess

This advice is for Kenmore Elite and Whirlpool Duet model front loading washers. If you experience a problem where the door becomes jammed and will not unlock or open, here's an easy way to gain access inside your washer WITHOUT calling the repairman.
1. Remove the lower panel under the door by loosening the three screws under the bottom edge on the front of the washer. HINT: If you prop up the front feet of the washer with some small blocks of wood, this will make access to the screws much easier.
2. With the screws removed, the lower panel should drop down then come off. If the panel sticks, a light tap on either side will knock it loose.
3. Reach your hand up inside the washer behind the front casing on the right-hand side. This is where the door latch assembly is located.
4. At the bottom of the door latch assembly is a small pull tab. This is the manual release for the door. Pull the tab straight down and the door will come open.
Sometimes these doors will not unlock for whatever reason. If there are no error codes being generated, this could have just been a momentary glitch. If you see "Fdl" "DLE" or "Fdu" error codes, these are usually indications of a failed door latch assembly and will require replacement.

A code E27 means a problem with the door lock. Try
unpluging the machine for an hour and see if it resets the lock.
If not remove the cover on the lower right
corner you will see a white plastic pull cord. Pull the cord and pull open the
door. If that doesn't reset the door lock you will need to replace the lock.
I had this problem. I tried to interupt a cycle just after it started and then couldn't start the cycle again, with the E27 code coming up.
e27 refers to a problem with the door locking mechanism which could be due to a number of causes. The problem I had was with the solenoid in the door, not a genuine problem with the door latch mechanism.
Here is how I fixed it:
(1) Set knob to off
(2) Hold down spin selector and Allergy rinse buttons and turn the knob to the LEFT (right does not work)
(3) The display then shows a number of program codes P01 to P14. (Pressing spin selector rotates through the codes).
(4) Press spin selector until you reach P02 on the display, then press the start button, the door will click and the machine will begin a cycle.
(5) Turn the knob to OFF, and then you should be able to use the machine as normal.
