Even though it's an older 2 wire system modern units are compatible. Here's an easy to follow video tutorial. Good luck!

Is this a 2 stage cooling system because only then you will need y2. You can put any color you like on these terminal but it have to match up with the thermostat for example if you put black on R terminal on air handler then you have to put black on R on thermostat
Here is what I would try to see if the thermostat is bad. Take the facing off the thermostat. Once this is done you will see where the wiring is connected should be a red green yellow and white Turn off power to unit make a diagram as to where the wiring was connected red to r green to g and so on Remove these wires red green and yellow and twist them together Go to the power source and re energize the unit once this is done all components should come on if not the thermostat isn't your problem Red is your low voltage power supply (24 volts) Green is your fan motor in furnance, yellow is your outside cooling unit. 1 other thing you might check. In the furnance if the doors are not properly installed on the face of the furnance it may not allow the unit to come on. There is a safety switch on the furnance where the filter is that if the door is not put on properly the whole system loses power and will not work. Hope this helps. Good Luck
is the system zoned? if so maybe the zoning control board to the damper motor is wired improperly. when a system freezez its because of 1- restricted air flow across coil, (maybe dirty filter) or 2-low refrigerant charge. again could depend on how its zoned.
