I think Mickey813's answer is correct. On the ST series mowers, there are 2 safety interlock switches that will either prevent the PTO from engaging or kill the engine once the PTO switch (or clutch) is engaged. One of these switches has likely gone bad or the wiring came loose. Oddly, on my ST120, I completely removed the seat safety switch and the 2 wires are disconnected and everything runs fine. If I directly connect them, the clutch or PTO kills the engine when they are engaged. Once when my PTO wasn't engaging, I temporarily bridged the 2 wires with a jumper, started the engine, then engaged the PTO (which killed the engine). After that, once I removed the jumper, the PTO would work like normal again each time I engaged the switch. It's like I reset it somehow by jumping these 2 wires temporarily. Hope that helps...

SOURCE: When I engage the front PTO the engine dies.

There is somthing in the PTO that is binding up. I am assuming the PTO is for the mower blades. The belt(s) could be binding up, not on the pulleys, etc. The blades should turn by hand easily.

SOURCE: i have a bolens 38 inch riding mower. it cranked

did you try depressing the clutch to disengage everything regardless of being in neutral? and it sounds like a pulley bearing went bad.try to spin the pulley with your hand and see if it moves.take the belt off to the mower deck and that should keep them from turning when you go to start it.

Testimonial: "thanks. at least i can crank it and get it to a trailer instead of pushing it. i really appreciate it.......cb"

Blade will not engage

There must be:
  • Someone in the seat
  • Not in park/idle.
  • A working blade start switch
  • A non defective PTO clutch.
  • Undamaged blade and greased blade bearings.

Cant get the switch to acctavate the mower deck on a cub cadet lawnmower

Check the fuse, tan/blue wire coming off ig switch or tan coming off PTO sw.
If it keeps blowing, check wire going to PTO unit for shorts or defective connection to PTO.
