Fridge is not cold but the light will turn on...

I just cleaned my fridge, and it was open quite a bit. The light is working, however the fan is not turning on and the fridge is not getting cold. I have it set on maximum cool. I have a Tempassure Amana...Is there a way to reset the fridge? Or....does it sound like we may need maintenance?

    We ended up finding the pressure switch inside the fridge (at the top of the fridge) Unplugging did not re-start the compressor and fan...It turns out the fridge had worked too hard and it set off the pressure switch. We also cleaned all of the coils to allow better air flow....It has been working fine so far!

    We were away for 24 hrs. During that time we had a storm and lost power for a short period of time. We came home and the alarm was activated on the refrig. It was silenced by us. We noticed the lights were working in the refrig and freezer but everything was melting and going bad. Sounds like it is not running but has power going to it because the interiors lights work. Electrical panel did not trip. Unknown why it is not working?

Try to uplug it for a few minutes then plug back in. Let us know if the compressor and fan kick on then otherwise we'll have to give more advice on where to look, etc.

Had same problem, but followed the unplug for a few minutes suggestion. While unplugged, got to back of fridge to discover back panel at bottom of fridge was dusty. Removed it to find that it was much heavier than appeared- cleaned, also noted fan had lots of dust- used vaccuum and toothbrush to get at hard areas. Plugged back in- happy fridge!!! Saved lots of time, $$$ and aggravation! Theory by total novice: heavy dust obstructed air flow exchange and caused overheating to fan. Next step, likely fan engine burn out and lots of expensive parts and labor, and who does that on a Sat night?! Relieved!

It could be the thermomstat. You ideally should try shorting out the thermostat mains feed through so that mains get to the compressor motor all the time, if it runs and gets cold I should say the stat has gone. The trouble with this is you need to know about mains safety and use an insulated means of shorting the switch feed through without doing the wrong thing and blowing yourself up! If in doubt call an expert!!, George

Whirpool wgi fridge freezer, fridge not cooling?

Most frideges get all their cooling from the freezer. There will be a fan and duct in the back of the freezer that pushes cold air down into the fridge. If the duct is blocked with ice or the fan motor has quit. Your freezer will work fine but the fridge will barely cool at all. Check that the fan runs when the compressor is running, ( turn both temp knobs to the highest cooling and leave door open until comp. comes on). If the fan runs your duct is plugged. If not you need a new " Freezer Fan Motor". Most are simple to replace and cost around $100.00.

Fridge not cooling

Hi,

Your description is quite complete but is rather baffling. Pls bear with me while we process by elimination. A few basic/working ideas:
  • most designs call for a single compressor to cool the freezer;
  • the cold air in the freezer is drawn towards the fridge to cool that area;
  • this is performed by a fan drawing air in the freezer through the evaporator;
  • most would have a vent or air pathway to guide the freezer air;
  • all would have thermostatic control to set the desired temperature;
  • some designs have two thermostatic control , 1 for the freezer, 1 for the fridge.
As applied to your concern:
  • compressor is working since freezer is OK;
  • fan is working as you posted but is the air drawn from the freezer, better still, is the air forced/vented into the fridge?
  • could you please check that the air is strongly blown into the fridge area;
  • a little experiment, open the fridge door, look for and press on the door switch, the light should go out, after a lengthy seconds, the fan should trigger on, not only would it be audible, you would notice the frozen air swirling inside the fridge area. If you hold on long enough to the dorr switch, the compressor should kick in (if it is not already running) since the thermostat of the fridge area (if one is present) would sense that the fan is turning but the fridge area is not cooling.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Refrigerator not getting cold even when set at lowest point.

Not enough information. But here is something which may help you diagnose the cause. I assume that you have a frost free fridge freezer. That there is a fan in the freezer which blows cold air down into the fridge.That the freezer is still cold. You can hear the fan cutting in and out.
Try opening the Fridge door and locate the little plunger switch which is pushed shut by closing the door (like the switch on you car door that turns the interior light on and off).
Push it in manually with your hand. (the fan needs to be running. The fan should blow cold air into the fridge. There will be a panel with vents, probably on the back off the fridge. Cold air should be coming from this. When working properly the temperature sensor in the fridge will control a flap like valve to allow or disallow entry of cold air from the freezer to the fridge.This controls the temperature of the fridge. If the flap is jammed shut no cold air can enter the fridge. Likely cause is ice build up, most likly in the back of the freezer blocking the path of the cold air. I had this problem on an old fridge of mine.I think that it is caused by the heat cycle not kicking in correctly to defrost the heat exchanger . I used to DISCONNECT THE FRIDGE FROM THE ELECTRICAL SUPPLY dismantle the inner panels of the freezer. And pour water over the ice monster blocking up the back of the freezer. Not a good solution i grant you. But it would work for a week or two. Then i would have to do it again. later i found a small panel on the back (outside) of the fridge with wiring and stuff inside it. There was a rotatable knob which clicked as you turned it. in one position you could hear it make the heat cycle kick in manually. I spent about 6 months doing this every few days whilst saving for a new fridge. It worked. But there is a RISK OF ELECTROCUTION .
Sorry i cant fix your problem . But this might be of some help to diagnose it. If you are not sure i wouldn't recommend fishing round in the electrics. I have had quite a few electric shocks doing stuff like this because i am not as careful as i should be, and i am not a qualified electrician. It never hurts me much. But some people will die quite easily from mains voltage. BE CAREFUL!!

Hotpoint Mistral Frost Free Fridge freezer - fridge not getting cold

We have just had to call out an engineer to get our 1 1/2 year old Hotpoint Graphite Frost Free Fridge Freezer repaired. The fridge had almost entitely stopped cooling even when on high. I was amazed at how easily the problem was sorted. The engineer removed all the basktes from the freezer to access the screws on the inside backpanel of the freezer. Once this panel was removed it was clear that the so called Frost Free doesn't really mean what it says. The ice need to be melted with a bit of simple care. It is obvious that with a bit of care it is easliy a diy job BUT PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND READ THE NEXT PART BEFORE YOU BEGIN TO REMOVE THE ICE> The ice forms around variouys pipes etc and he usecd a screwdriver to help release the ice quicker than waiting for it to defrost and he also used a simple hairdryer to help speed up the process. He had a ntowel and a basin to take care of the water. Next time I would have no problem doing this myself but I would need to leave it a little while to defrost and NOT USE A SCREWDRIVER as I am sure somehow I would puncture a pipe or the wall of the freezer itself and I am quite used to doing the odd bit of DIY. On a difficulkty scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being difficult I would rate the job as about a 3. Hope this helps anyone who reads this about £70.

Not refrigerating

DO you have a thermometer to check the temp in both sections? MY first guess at the temp problem is that the fan has quit OR the vent betwen the freezer and the fridge is blocked. I bet on the fan being bad. Open the fridge door and hold in the little switch that operates the light. YOu should hear a fan running . If not, then the fan is kaput.. JOhnno.
