Okay, so my friend has a Vivitar Vivicam 5118 and it's having issues. First, the memory card is completely empty, second the little wright protection switch is of so the card isn't locked or anything. When she tries to take pictures, the camera says something like, "memory card is full," then after a few seconds it says in red letters, "card error." The camera also freezes from time to time. We tried formatting the card on the computer but when we do that it says that it is unable to be formatted. We've also tried formatting it on the camera and it is also unable to be formatted. What can we do? Is it a problem with the camera or the SD card?
Same issue same model just bought:
- format done as ntfs didn't work .. tried fat didn't also
- SD lock is not on
- formatted using camera went through but still showing memory full
- the only thing worked for 1 time restore default settings but only captured 1 photo then again memory full
- removed memory still showing memory full
what next ,, ?
What size is the memory card. If it's larger than 4GB then it won't work in the 5118.
Try using another card. Don't format it in your computer but do format it in the camera before trying to take pictures.

Assuming your camera acts like a removable drive when connected to the PC try the following.
SOURCE: Memory Card Format Fail
Never format a memory card using windows. Always use the camera to format it.
In genereal though, cards do not need formating before use, the camera will sort this out for you

Well, make sure you have checked the small gray tab on the left side of the sd card. It needs to be in the unlocked position. Too bad for me, because i have the same problem and my sd card isn't locked...

Hi Tanya
It sounds like something was corrupted when you transferred your pictures to the computer.
If you have all the pictures safely on your computer, it will be ok to reformat the memory card and then just copy and paste the pictures back to the card.
Insert the card in your card reader, go to My Computer, you should be able to see the card as a removable drive. You can click and open it just like a folder and see what is on the card.
I would also back up the pictures to an external drive or dvd so they are extra safe!

i know this is late, but my camera had the same problem.
1. If you go in the setup menu.
2. Push the right button once and scroll down to the menu that says format.
3. It will ask you if you want to erase all data.
4. Select No and everything should be fine.
