I also lost the battery cap for the LR550. I signed up for an account on Nikon.com and asked how to get a replacement through the "Service and Support" section. Very delighted to report that they immediately FEDEXed a replacement part - free of charge!!!
Love my range finder, disappointed that the cap fell out but impressed with the service. Will put some tape over the battery cap from now on.

I have an lr550 range finder and the original battery cap did not have a slot to assist in the removal and reinstallation. It had a rough surface instead that you had to push down and turn with the thumb. I contacted Nikon support and they shipped me a new redesigned cap ups free of charge! I was very impressed with their service and support.

Harbor Freight has a kit that has them in it and most industrial tool supply companies have them. It's a security screw. there are many kits availably with an assortment of bits in them. Drill Master has a 100 piece kit that's pretty cheap. Item#91310

there is a silver quarter sized screw out cover on the battery compartment. It has a slot so you can use a coin or screwdriver to remove the cover.

Same problem. Conclusion: just because it has the NIKON name does not mean it is not a piece of Chinese junk.

hello dh.... sadly these things, like Nikon cameras don't bounce well. Send it into Nikon for a free estimate. If you open it up you will void any warranty on it. Joe
