GE Profile Model PTC22MBMBRCC Counter Depth Refrigerator Noise

Freezer and refrigerator both stopped cooling. I noticed frost buildup was apparent through the vent at bottom front of the freezer compartment , so I disconnected power for two weeks to ensure a thorough defrost. Once water seemed to stop draining to the floor, I reconnected the power, and the cooling seemed to resume normally. However, there is now an intermittent knocking sound that seems to occur when the fan is running. I'm wondering what moving part is making this noise and needs to be replaced.. Could it be the fan or fan motor failing that caused the frost buildup, or is there some other likely component failure?.

The available assembly schematic is not very helpful to a novice trying to disassemble the freezer interior, without breaking anything, to get acess and view suspect components. A technician deterined that the defrost heater and defrost thermostat checked out okay. The defrost controller, a simple plugin component a.k.a. defrost timer, was determined to be the defective component.. I replaced the defective defrost controller, which apparently had been causing the noise that sounded like it could be ice buildup interfering with the evaporator fan. The fan was not the problem. The defrost controller was apparently stuck, causing the noise and the failure to periodically defrost.

You have a defrost issue which need to be dealt with. the fans is hitting the ice that has formed after 5 to 10 days of not going through a proper defrost phase, you either have a bad defrost controller, def t-stat, or def heater. and can easily id the issue

What is the procedure to trouble shoot and determine which component is the bad one? Is there special diagnostic equipment or expertise necessary, or can I determine the culprit myself without blindly replacing all of the potentially defective parts?

  • MARLON KELLER Apr 17, 2012

1st do you have a multimeter and more importantly do you know how to use it... if so you will need to ohm out the Def heater and Def tstat audible ohms is easiest if equiped with digital meter (Note the def tstat is only in a closed loop at or below 30*f otherwise will read infinite or open). If those two components test fine replace the Def control ( def timer or main control board)

SOURCE: kemore model 795.7731 bottom freezer

You are probably correct that it is the evap motor. If you are seeing frost on the back wall then there is probably some ice built up around the motor and the fan blade is hitting it.
Try defrosting the freezer and look very closely all around the seal for the freezer drawer. It is common for moisture to freeze in the self closers in the drawer rails and not let the drawer close completely on one side or the other. If this happens the small gap will allow the freezer to frost excessively.
Sorrry to be slow in responding. I have been very busy this week and have not been on line very much.

SOURCE: Evaporator fan stops working due to ice buildup around fan.

you need a drain tube heater.it is like a chain fence tie made from alluminum, you can actually use the fence ties, wrap one side around defrost heater and stick the other side in drain.that will prevent it from happening again

SOURCE: GE Refrigerator/Freezer not cooling

Loss of coldness is common with compressor related problems....relay and overload(simple fix), loss/leak of refridgerant(need a cert. tech). need to check the compressor and see if its running....do this by pulling the unit out and removing the back panel, place your hand on the compressor and see if it feels like its running....if not probably just a relay, if it is running, could be a more serious problem dealing with sealed system.

SOURCE: Stops cooling ice melts and leaks water on the floor

That model refrigerator uses the mother control board for deciding when defrost is to take place. It has no defrost timer or Adaptive Defrost Control like other refrigerators. This sounds like *********** board part number WR55X10942 is malfunctioning. The board decides most functions of your refrigerator. Until the board is replace I do not believe the problem will resolve itself. Thanks, Sea Breeze

GE Profile refrigerator Model # PFSF6PKXCWW motor is noticeably louder

if you are talking about the motor in the freezer the ice build up could be causing the fan to beat against the ice... could be a defrost cycle problem,,,, if ice is building up on rear freezer wall you have a defrost cycle problem and the ice is forminf around fan causing fan blades to hit the ice (loud noise)

I have a GE Profile counter depth French door refrigerator bottom freezer and I keep getting frost in the freezer. The seal on the door isn't as tight as the seal on the refrigerator but no cold air...

Where are you getting frost at? Is it on the back wall in the freezer? if so - your problem may be a defrost issue and in that case you would need to hire a professional appliance repair technician to service your refrigerator.

Not cool enough

Make sure the air door in the refrigerator compartment is open at least a little and not blocked by anything. This is located just to the left of the bottom drawers. Also check the air inlet located at the top left rear of the refrigerator for flow. If none is present then you have a frost buildup caused by frequent opening and closing (common to these models) an ice cube dispenser door hanging partly open (Also common). Check this by looking from the inside of your freezer door down the ice chute. A flashlight helps a lot here. Also may be a defrost issue.

Evap fan stops running/low cooling, Unplug Frig Evap fan runs

Is there anything obstructing the fan area, ice build up ? It is normal for your freezer to get warm if evap fan is not working, it is essential for it to work :) A defrost cycle should kick on a timer or as needed (adaptive) and there should not be excessive frost buildup that it blocks your evap fan. I would have suggested you unplug your refrigerator for about 10 minutes and see if that resets your control board - if not, then you will need service - either replacing motor assembly or a faulty control board.

Refrigerator wont cool

all the cooling comes from the freezer. a fan pushes 20% of the air over into the fresh side.look for something blocking the airflow into fresh side. also check for defrost malfunction(is there frost buildup in the freezer on back wall towards the bottom.

No cooling

Both refrigerator and freezer operate from one system. Air from freezer cools refrigerator. Check back wall of freezer for frost buildup. If frost is evident on the back wall of the freezer it indicates a defrost system problem.
