When the LCD is closed, then the default resolution of the external monitor is being used by Windows 7 (It apparently has autodetected the size of the monitor and knows the Highest optimal resolution it will display.) If you have Windows 7, click the start button and select Control Panel, then select "power options". In the left margin select "change when the computer sleeps". In the next box select "change advanced power settings". In the advanced power options box look for "power button and lid" and click the plus box next to it and change your settings. Make sure to click "apply" after changing the settings or it won't take.
