Is this a problem of just this make and model? GE WSXH208A1WW
I need to replace this washing machine because the grease was damaging my clothes. The repair person said it was the bearings and too costly to fix. The machine is about 6 years old.
This is a 50 year old problem on washers. All brands. You just got lucky on this one.
If you buy a new one, consider a unit built by Whirlpool. They also make Kenmore and others.

That is about the right price. Here is a link to the part and you could replace the part yourself.
Just remove the 2 screws that hold the front bottom kick plate on and remove it. The control board will be on the bottom right side toward the back of the machine.
The bad news is that you most likely need a new timer. I get mine (used) from e-bay after looking up the parts at "Sears Parts" by model number. Sears will sell you new parts by model number for your GE.
Be blessed.
When a GE washing machine gets grease on your clothes the problem is the transmission. Depending on the age of the washing machine it is not always worth replacing the transmission.
Better to invest into a new washing machine.
All washer machines have a "transmission" - just like a car these units have oil in them and when the seals that protect the oil from going to our clothes is breake, oil finds its way to your clothes.
Transmission needs to be replaced.
